Land o' boowu We're located here in Minnesota, "The North Star State and the Land of 10,000 Lakes". There are actually 12,000 lakes here. Minnesota is also the headwaters of the Mississippi river at Lake Itasca. The reason we have so many lakes is that one day Paul Bunyan had his blue ox Babe tied up because he had been bad. Paul went off to do some logging, when Paul came back he found that Babe had ripped himself free of the chains. Paul Bunyan chased Babe all over Minnesota, the blue ox and Paul Bunyan left their footprints all over Minnesota. Then it began to start raining heavily, and all of the footprints filled with water. This is how the 10,000 lakes of Minnesota were created. And for you Cliff Clavin's out there, Minnesota's name origin comes from a Dakota Indian word meaning ky-tinted waterand the name of this state came from the Minnesota River so named by the Dakota Sioux for the river's "cloudy" or "milky water." The Dakota word "mnishota" means "cloudy" or "milky water." The Mississipi name origin is from an Indian word meaning ather of Watersand also means "large river" to the Chippewa Indians.
