Authentic, Quality Autographs & Collectibles
Cool Stuff, Inc. has been a full-time dealer in autographs, sports memorabilia, and other fine collectibles since 1987. We are also the EXCLUSIVE representative for Football Hall of Famer and Pittsburgh Steeler legend, JACK LAMBERT. But before you bid on any of our items, please take some time to read our opinions on two very disturbing matters which plague our hobby. The first is the annoying phrase "Certificate of Authenticity." Whether you are a novice to collecting or an established dealer/collector, you must be aware by now of how meaningless and ridiculous this concept is. We understand that in this wonderful age of cyber-scum , there will be those who need to be assured that the item they have purchased from an unknown dealer is, in fact, authentic. Our only advise to you is before you click that button that says "Submit Bid," that you check out who you are buying from, even if it is us. Ask around, check their customer feedback. But a piece of paper that says, "Yes, I swear it's real" means absolutely nothing coming from a thief. Think about it, if he or she is a forger, why would you give them the opportunity to be a liar as well? The old adage applies when buying autographs: If it looks too good to be true, it probably is. So instead of offering you a worthless Certificate, we give you a meaningful "Guarantee of Authenticity." We stand by every item we sell...for the life of the item. In fact, if we have any doubt whatsoever as to the origin and authenticity of a particular item, we will not post it for auction. After more than 20 years as full-time autograph/memorabilia dealers, we stake our reputation on everything we sell. We'll be here tomorrow, and your total satisfaction is all that matters to us. But we caution you to select your "experts" carefully as most have an agenda which has very little to do with actually authenticating items. Our days of supplying useless Certificates of Authenticity are over, and if this bothers you, please do not bid. Furthermore, why should we supply a COA for free when you are more than willing to pay a third party, self-annointed authenticator for something they know very little about? Along the same equally annoying line of thought, PLEASE DO NOT REQUEST PHOTOS of athletes/celebrities signing an item as a means of authenticating merchandise. Again, it means absolutely nothing. Our company represents several athletes, including Hall of Famer Jack Lambert, and we will occasionally include a photo of him signing in an item's description. We're more than happy to email a jpeg to you, and you may do as you wish with it. But that doesn't provide any proof whatsoever that your particular item is that exact item. In fact, in the past few months, we have accessed Lambert autographs on the Internet from dealers who included photos from their "recent private signing." The photo included Jack Lambert and me during a show appearance! So much for the "photo of authenticity" theory. Therefore, if it sounds as though we are painting a bleak picture of the hobby, we are. For every quality dealer out there, and there are many, there is an equal number of scumbags who will tell you whatever you want to hear and give you all of the documentation you require to guarantee only that you have purchased a piece of garbage. But ultimately, it is your final decision to purchase.
And now if we may ramble about an even more disturbing trend in our industry. Self-proclaimed experts. Recently, these "experts" have even incorporated businesses to charge collectors for their opinion. What a scam! Not only does this border on illegal, but the hobby endorses it! A few individuals have passed themselves off as the ultimate voice of the hobby, and we've swallowed it without asking any questions about their credibility. And what are the odds that the friends and associates of these "experts" are ever having anything rejected? There are countless documented cases when these "experts" have been dead wrong. We have purchased large lots from some of the most well-known auction houses in the country, only to have individual items from those "pre-approved" lots rejected when we resold them. Oddly enough, those who rejected said items also provided COAs to the auction house for a price. In other words, they are even rejecting items they've already provided authenticity for. Which tells us they aren't even looking at the items, just depositing a check in the bank for a "blanket" authentication. Don't get me wrong, there are those in the hobby we deem REAL experts with real experience (i.e. Ron Gordon, Bill Corcoran, and Pat Quinn). These are all individuals who have been doing this since Hector was a pup. We all have our own fields of expertise and consult each other on a regular basis. But the fact of the matter is, very few of us were around when Babe Ruth or Ty Cobb or Jim Thorpe roamed the Earth. So no one can proclaim themselves to be the ultimate voice of the hobby. However, some people do, and they want a fee from you to enhance their own egos. Sure I'm jealous. Why didn't I think of that? I'll tell you why, because as good as we are and as committed as we are to doing the right thing, my opinion still costs NOTHING. Because that's what it's worth. The fact of the matter is, anyone who wishes to charge you for their opinion is using some sort of egomaniacal guidelines based upon examples which THEY perceive to be real, and not what is necessarily factual. In my mind, this is even more dangerous than people who sit in their basements and sign items themselves. If "experts" really cared about the integrity of this hobby/business, they wouldn't be asking you to pay for it. It's nothing more than a case of "The Emperor's New Clothes," and collectors are falling for it like sheep. It is our opinion that there will never be an "expert" in this field, only those who proclaim themselves as such and will continue to serve as "hired guns" for those who seek to profit from their self-annointed reputation. In closing, if you wish to line the pockets of these individuals and are blind enough to actually pay them for their opinion as it pertains to something they know little or nothing about, then please do NOT bid on our autographed items. And when all of these "experts" are extinct, or at least spend more or their time assasinating each other's characters than authenticating, we'll still be here. Thanks for your time and good luck bidding and collecting.
