I am from a small town in British Columbia, and Iman is from Jakarta. We've both lived and worked abroad for long periods of time -- I was in Northeast Asia, and Iman was in Chile and China. We met in Vancouver in 2002 and were both somewhat surprised to discover that we shared a passion for geography and maps. We began looking around Ebay about six months after that, and we've been actively buying and selling antique maps and prints (mostly botanicals) ever since. In 2005, we did one of those crazy things that everybody should do at least twice in a lifetime -- we sold everything and moved to Bali, Indonesia. We continued selling on Ebay from there until I finally couldn't stand the weather any more. 542 consecutive days of summer were enough! We're now in Montreal, where I lived between 1986 and 1996, and where I went to university and started out in my career. I teach English at a Montreal high school, and Iman is a manager at a hotel. While we're not quite ready to give up our day jobs, we do look forward to being able to deal in maps and prints full-time. In the meantime, we're learning as much as we can about this curious little niche market. We've become quite internet savvy and spend a lot of time (sometimes too much!) on Ebay. We're very open to cooperating with others in new business ventures, and we're aiming to establish some solid and mutually beneficial partnerships with wholesalers and retailers in the antiques & decor business. Despite our rather bland day jobs, we both have quite a lot of previous entrepreneurial experience. Our current project is establishing our own map sellers' website under our 'MapsPast' name: http://www.mapspast.com |
