ABOUT THE ARTIST
Lorraine W. Selby Fine Arts . . . . represents the fruition of a dream. As the daughter of . . . . a Pennsylvania Dutch craftsman, Lorraine Wilt Selby was encouraged to begin drawing at an early age. Though she originally pursued a career in health care, Mrs. Selby creativity blossomed into a second career under the tutelage of Charles Holder. Over the years she developed an expressive style and special talent for portraiture. Though she strives for . . . . realism in her work, her portraits have the softness of John Singer Sargent, with a smoky-jade palette reminiscent of Gainsborough. In her portraiture Mrs. Selby is inspired by the clarity of the Dutch Masters, and by the strong American vision of Andrew Wyeth. She considers capturing the essence of a personality on canvass to be the most intriguing of challenges. In addition to portraiture . . . . Mrs. Selby skill in the use of oil and watercolor, is rooted in the culture and the wildlife of our American countryside. As an admirer of Robert Bateman and Seerey-Lester, she feels that living in North Central Florida, with its wealth of Florida wildlife, plus the availability of exotic specimens, has enhanced her development as a wildlife artist. Mrs. Selby hand-painted . . . . fine china, featuring a botanical motif, has become much sought after. Original pieces are often commissioned by buyers who desire special colors or custom designs, worked in her unique style. Indeed, much of this artist time is divided between privately commissioned works and those to be found in several area galleries. She is also a popular teacher . . . . accepting private students or seminar groups. Her pupils have included elementary schoolchildren as well as senior citizens. Lorraine tries to help her students attain artistic proficiency without losing a sense of fun and pride in their efforts. Lorraine has been a selling artist since 1978. Lorraine W.
