Raccoons
|
Two years later I moved to Florida.
Five acres of land and I was ready to go. I started rescuing baby squirrels. The little squirrels did not have any hair when I got them. Word soon got around and that winter I raised twelve. In April I released them. That winter I also bought six Rhode Island Red chicks. Luck was with me, I had 5 hens and 1 rooster. Three years later I have 17 different breeds of chickens, 2 breeds of geese, and 1 breed each of Quail, Ducks, and Guineas. I also rescued 2 pot bellied pigs which gave me 9 babies. Four rabbits, 7 Raccoons, a Skunk, and 2 dogs.
I have never been happier.
All I need now is for all of the different breeds of chickens to lay enough so I can list them on EBay. Some of them are young and have not started laying and I was not as lucky as I was with the Rhode Island Reds, I have more roosters than hens and will have to raise some more before I will get enough eggs a day to list them.
The following is an email I received from a customer who bought eggs from me back in the spring.

Hi June,
Thought you would like to know... We purchased some RIR eggs from you in March (see below). We didn't get a great hatch rate (could be for a number of reasons), but the chicks we did get are FANTASTIC.
My kids just entered their Cockerel and Pullet (Norman and Brenda) in the local Ag Fair. They both won GRAND CHAMPION!!!!!! They are absolutely beautiful and the kids are thrilled. The judge wanted to know where we got such beautiful stock (they look much better than her own birds :).
Thanks again. We love our chicks,
Jackie

Hi June,
It's me again. Thought you would like to see the note I just got from one of the fair sponsors where we showed our chickens. This man works for FDA and has a Ph.D. in poultry nutrition. He raises every breed imaginable and REALLY knows his stuff! You should be very proud of your birds!
See note below.
Thx again, -Jackie
Jackie, I will save some eggs for you to hatch. How many will your incubator hold? Usually about 4 dozen fit in my Styrofoam incubators. If you hatch them, I'll take them back here on the farm and raise them for next year's shows.
Thank you for showing your beautiful Rhode Island Red chickens. You should try to hatch some eggs from them sometime this year also. I would like to have a dozen chicks from your RI reds. Your birds are as good as any I have seen. They meet the breed standards better than mine.
I do have one negative feedback. I think I did everything possible to try to make her happy. One of the things she was unhappy about is; she did not think I was answering her emails. I was but due to problems my server was having they were not getting to her in a timely manner. I changed servers, and I also contacted everyone who had ordered eggs to let them know I would not be shipping any more of that breed until I could hatch a batch to make sure they were fertile. The customers had the option of a refund or to wait at least 14 days until I candled the eggs to make sure the chicks were developing. Everyone opted to wait on the eggs. After the 14 days I shipped everyone of them fresh eggs.
