The Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Coins

Through the fifties and into the sixties the catalogue under went a name change or two settling into THE STANDARD CATALOGUE OF CANADIAN COINS. It was the birth of the 'standard' and what was soon to become the 'bible' of Canadian coins, with over a million copies in print. The original guide is now divided into four catalogues: COINS, TOKENS, GOVERNMENT PAPER MONEY and CHARTER BANK NOTES.

To supplement the 'STANDARD' in 1962, the Press began publishing a dealers' buying guide (The Charlton Coin Guide). With the buoyant coin market of the time this guide soon was selling tens of thousands of copies. Beside numismatic books, the early years saw the publishing of Lymans, a Canadian stamp catalogue and, of course the stamp albums that were need to accompany it. It is interesting to note that Lymans was the first four-color stamp catalogue published in North America.

In 1981 with the formal registration of the 'CHARLTON PRESS' the first edition of the Charlton Standard Catalogue of Royal Doulton Figurines was released. This catalogue was to be the beginning of a series of guides on 20th Century English ceramic collectables. It is interesting now, when nearly forty years later, to note that this series is classified by the current reviewers and collectors as 'bibles' in their fields.

WHERE WE ARE TODAY:

Today the CHARLTON PRESS has over thirty-five titles, publishing each title on varying frequencies as dictated by market demands. The Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Coins is published annually in July, with the 2005 edition being the 60th. The Charlton Standard catalogue of Royal Doulton Figurines, up for renewal in the winter of 2005, will see the 10th edition being released.
We began in 2001, on one of our most ambitious undertakings yet, the publishing of a six-volume set on the Historical Medals of Canada. Three other catalogues are in varying stages of development: Royal Copenhagen, Royal Crown Derby are started and progressing with a book on Canadian Merchant Tokens in the planning stage.

WHAT WE OFFER:

The Charlton Press offers the collectors a thoroughly researched guide to their chosen field of collecting. Each catalogue contains prices, histories, illustrations, designers, modelers, styles, variations, detailed photographs for each listed item. Every catalogue contains an introduction, a guide to dating, information on clubs and societies, listings of auction houses and fairs together with cross-referencing indices and shape guides that maybe needed to aid in identification of difficult items. Most catalogues will carry up to four, 4-color, eight page inserts that will illustrate the rare collectables or assist the collector in distinguishing between the different colourways of an item that may very well separate the common from the rare.
