eBay has stated that it is okay for the seller to request feedback from the buyer before returning the favor. (I am not quoting eBay -- just paraphrasing.)
When I began selling on eBay, I would leave feedback immediately after receiving the buyers payment. About half of my buyers would reciprocate. I have found that there are many members, after reviewing their "feedback left", that did not leave feedback for anybody.
I resorted to requesting feedback first. "Please remember to leave feedback, after which, I will be more than happy to do the same. Thank you." That is the statement I included with my packing slips. Still, I had only about half of my buyers responding.
The following is the statement which I now include on my packing slips,: "Please contact me when your purchase arrives, so that I know that the transaction is complete and I can leave feedback. Have a great day!" I have had a great responce with this statement. About 85% of my buyers are more than happy to contact me and leave feedback.
Feedback is very important to all eBay users, but loses it's value if emotional, spur-of-the-moment things are just blurted out. Feedback is not the place to rant if you are unhappy or angry, there are dispute and resolution channels for that. Most neutral/negative feedback that is left could have been avoided by simply communicating with your buyer/seller.
Hopefully you can find something positive to report about the buyer or seller that you are dealing with, even if overall you did not get the exact result you wanted. Try to give accurate feedback that reflects the other person and their manner of doing business, do not leave untoward feedback just because you didn't like the ending of movie that you bought, you had to wait an extra day for the money order to arrive by mail, or the sweater you bought made your mom look fat. Even if an item breaks in transit, or is not as you expected when it arrives, or it has been a week and your buyer has not paid yet, that does not warrant negative feedback in itself. Contact the person, find out what is going on or let them know what's happening, work out a replacement/refund, give your seller/buyer a chance to make it better; but none of that can happen without communication.
BUYER:
You found the perfect thing on eBay, you paid for it, and you have received the item, but you are not done yet! As soon as you receive your purchase and are satisfied, it is time to let others know what kind of items, service, communication, etc. can be expected from this seller. Use words and phrases that accurately reflect your particular transaction with the seller, like "Great transaction" "fast shipping", "quick response to emails", "would buy from again" or "item just as described". Simply saying "thanks" tells the future buyers nothing. What were you looking for in reviewing feedback before buying? It is important to let others know important things, as well as whether or not you would buy from the person again. Yes, sometimes things happen; mail gets lost, items become damaged, or the item simply does not meet expectations. Whatever the case may be, if you have an issue, contact the seller, give them a chance to make things right with you, do not just shortcut to the feedback forum. Remember, communication, communication, communication! Do not ever leave feedback for a transaction while you are upset; it cannot be taken back. Give the seller and the situation time, and try to leave factual, not emotional, feedback, after you have given your seller a chance to make things right. You have up to 3 months to leave feedback for that transaction. Negative feedback should rarely be left, and should be reserved only for a seller who is completely unresponsive. Otherwise, leaving negative feedback will end up reflecting poorly on you, not the seller.
SELLER:
Feedback should be factual, and should assist future eBay sellers in determining whether or not they wish to accept the bid of this person that you are dealing with now. What would you want to see if you are checking out the feedback of a potential buyer? "Rapid payment", of course! Be creative, make it fun! How about "lightening fast pay" or "Pays faster than the speed of light". What else is important to impart to other sellers? Well, would you do business with this person again? Something like "welcome back anytime" or "Please come again soon". You do not have to add details, just the statement itself says it all - the highest praise for a buyer is this! Then, if you have room, you can add anything else that stands out about this buyer, "friendly", "pleasant", or smooth transaction" that help sum up your dealings with them and let others know what to expect.
