Rebajes store in New York 1950's

| I have been buying and selling vintage copper jewelry for years. I grew up in Arizona and loved the fake turquoise copper jewelry we would buy at trading posts and roadside stands while traveling. In particular, I love Bell and the artistry of Rebajes. Here is a little about both artists. |

Rebajes was a famous modernist jewelry designer and his pieces are prized. Rebajes made the S on his signature look like an infinity symbol since he loved morbius strips. From the ModernSilver website: In the early 50's Rebajes opened a beautiful modern store on 5th Avenue at 37th street. It had S-shaped glass counters suspended by steel rods from the ceiling. He arranged the store windows to be as artistic as the work he displayed in them. He had a workshop on 17th street, east of 5th Avenue, with many craftsmen making his designs. He spent his days in the workshop while his wife Pauline ran the store with two or three sales ladies.
Bell Trading Post was in business from 1935 to the late 1980s. It was founded in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and named after founder Jack Michelson's wife, Mildred Bell. The company sold Indian jewelry at tourist locations in the west. The hallmark is usually a bell or a bell on a post. Later, it was sold and became Sun Bell. Their hallmark is a bell surrounded by an Aztec sun. |
