Re: Charitable Donation Information
Dear Tony and Kevin:
Thank you very much for creating and setting up the first Cornyation Ebay on-line auction. What a clever and creative idea for capitalizing on the King’s “star” power and, hopefully, a successful fundraiser.
Background
Briefly, Cornyation is an official Fiesta® San Antonio event, Cornyation is one of the most popular events of Fiesta Week. Cornyation can be traced back to as early as 1951 when it was originally staged by SALT (San Antonio Little Theater) at the Arneson River Theater as part of A Night in Old San Antonio®. The show's irreverent pokes at politicians, the prominent and the not-so-prominent caused its demise as part of NIOSA in 1964. It was moved and performed once more in 1965. In 1979, the show was revived for one year as part of NIOSA and, then, in 1982 a group of local artists and designers revived the current version which has remained uninterrupted for the past 27 years.
Cornyation is a Section 501(c) (3) tax exempt organization that generously supports other local charities that are unable to secure more broad-based or mainstream funding. The only source of revenue for the organization is the three-day Fiesta event, Cornyation, which is run on an all volunteer basis. There are no full or part-time paid staff and the entire board of directors, designers, and other “members” are 100% volunteers. As a result, there is no load on the fundraising efforts outside of the actual cost of the show and, unlike other charities; Cornyation is has been able to return over 90% of its total income in the form of donations to other charities. In most instances, Cornyation returns over 100% of its actual ticket revenue in the form of donations to other charities.
Last year, Cornyation elected to support the following charities: San Antonio Aids Foundation, BEATAids (a black Aids education and assistance agency), and other local charities. In addition, Cornyation and CornyX (its alumni spin-off) created a scholarship, for local high school theatre arts students, in honor of the Robert Rehm, a designer who became a paraplegic as a result of a work related injury. Robert a former teacher at Jefferson is wheelchair-bound but, despite his condition, has successfully designed several costumes since the accident and is the designer of this year’s medal. The Robert Rehm scholarship has been awarded to deserving students every year since its inception.
The Fiesta Commission has referenced Cornyation as one of the most successful events of Fiesta and has sold out crowds at every performance. As a result of this strong support, Cornyartion gave away over $100,000 to selected charities and the Rehm scholarship.
Listing
It is our understanding that the auction will be conducted under the name Cornyation and will generally follow the format outlined below:
The Auction will be launched on eBay on Monday (4/13/09) for a five or seven day auction.
Each seat will have its own auction page so there will be twelve
different auctions running each closing 15 minutes apart.
Starting bid for the 'package' listed below will be determined by the designers.
All proceeds go to Cornyation.
Any bidder with a donation amount over $100 will receive a receipt
for a tax deductible donation to Cornyation for the amount over $100.
The “package” for the winning bidders includes:
1) Special reserved onstage seat (one of two available for each of the six shows) adjacent to the King Anchovy's throne for the entire performance.
2) Special entrance to the theater via the stage door entrance by one-show only special pass.
3) Pre-show meet and greet with King Anchovy in her dressing room prior to the performance.
4) Back stage tour (post performance) with a cast member.
5) An official King Anchovy Medal.
6) A signed picture (delivered the week after the performance) of winning bidder and King Anchovy.
7) A copy (if a DVD of one of the six performances is made) of the
entire performance on DVD.
We appreciate your continued support of our charitable mission and hope this provides you the necessary information.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. I am,
Very truly yours,
Thomas W. McKenzie
