Captial Area Corporate Recycling Council Donating computers to an elementary school Annual Garage Sale America Recycles Day The Capital Area Corporate Recycling Council is a nonprofit electronic refurbisher/recycler committed to e-waste reduction and the use of recycled goods by educating corporations, policy-makers and the public concerning e-waste, by reducing the stream of e-waste to landfills, and by providing recycled computers and equipment to schools, nonprofits, and low income families. The CACRC is able to refurbish for reuse the working equipment that comes into our various programs and recycle the rest using qualified vendors in the country (www.cacrc.com). The CACRC was incorporated as a non-profit in 1997 and has been recycling electronics for the past twelve years. • In 2008 the CACRC reuse and recycle efforts according to the EPA equivalency tool produced an energy savings equal to 1907 US households, greenhouse gas reduction equal to removing 1347 passengers cars from the road, a solid waste reduction equal to 414 US households, hazardous waste reduction equal to 173223 bricks, air emissions reduction equal to 89328 tons. A total environmental cost savings of $1,875,019. • In 2008 the CACRC recycled 1053.12 tons of electronic material. • In 2007-2008 in partnership with the Baton Rouge Area Foundation and St. Joseph’s Academy the CACRC refurbished 400 computer systems that went to the Cordoba Mexico school system and orphanages. In December 2008 the CACRC donated 100 computers systems to Mission Honduras International. • In May 2008 the CACRC was featured on the Sundance Channel’s Big Ideas for a Small Planet: Recycle as a model program. • In 2008 the CACRC’s Computers for La. Kids Program had 75 participating schools throughout the state and reached over 1000 kids with surplus computers from state government. The children learn to rebuild computers and donate these to other schools. We supply CLK classrooms with refurbished computers, train the teachers and collect the scrap material at the end of the school year. Approximately 1000 kids go through the program every year. 70% are in small towns or suburban areas. We placed 785 refurbished computers into the CLK schools in 2008. The middle and high school students in turn learn on these computers and many times redistribute them into nearby schools or non-profits. In 2008 we partnered with Lockheed Martin to refurbish 1200 laptops computers to supply every 8th grader in the New Orleans public schools with a laptop as part of ongoing hurricane relief. A press conference was held in October 2008 with Paul Pastorek. In 2008 we also held a smaller relief project for college students after Gustave. CACRC also has a program designed to help low income families with children obtain computers and laptops called Computer’s for Louisiana’s Families. This program reached 670 families in 2008. For many of these families it is the first computer in their homes. It has been a program that has primarily impacted the Baton Rouge and Shreveport areas. Close to 85% of students in La public schools are low income on free or reduced lunch.
