Artist Statement
Painting, and drawing to a certain degree, allows me to immerse
myself in the process of seeing and looking, an activity that people today
rarely make time to do. The fast pace of the modern world and easy access
to so many forms of entertainment has shortened our attention span.
Concentrating solely on the innate values and hues of a subject has allowed me
to develop patience and an ability to focus that seems to grow with each
completed painting. Being an artist means looking silently and honestly at the
natural world. For me, it has become the defining point of my life, allowing me
to appreciate the beauty in many things I might not have even looked at years
ago.
This dedicated concentration on the task of "seeing" can
introduce a stage of "meditation", a method to become more in tune with
the visible world around us, and through it...with
ourselves.
In order to grow artistically and spiritually, I am constantly looking for
subjects that inspire me to paint. It is a continual learning process, which can
captivate the mind and lead to a greater sensitivity of the world around us.

Contemporary
Realism
ALTHOUGH
she paints primarily in a realistic style, some of Nora's work could be
classified as "modern contemporary realism". Her dramatic use of color
and intuitive sense of balance can slide some works over into the surreal
category. Many of her portraits exhibit color in a bold and unexpected manner
that somehow manages to seem more real than life itself.
Classically trained, Nora
paints in oil, pastels and watercolor, and uses only professional
artist-quality materials.
Archival paints and supports ensure a work that will last a lifetime.
She
is
a member of the Pastel Society of America, the Portrait Society of
America, the Fine Arts Association of Northwest Ohio and the Toledo Artist's
Club. Prices for her work have risen an average of 10% per year for the last
three years.
She has a degree
in Graphic Design and Communications from Terra College and worked in the
printing industry for 15 years before making the decision to pursue her artistic
goals full-time. Always an avid reader, she purchased several old volumes of
fine art books on Ebay and found herself irresistibly drawn to the works of
Vermeer, Titian, Rembrandt, and Sargent, as well as many others. These
books, along with their large colored plates and intimate biographies, became
her teachers; inspiring her to take life drawing classes and an advanced
painting class at Defiance College in 2001.
She continued with her own rigorous program of self study and recent
works have won numerous awards in local and regional competitions,
including two Judge's Choice Awards, two overall Best of Shows in 2004 and 2005.
In 2005 she was awarded a People's Choice
Award and First in Drawing at the Fine Arts Association Annual show in
Delta, Ohio.
Private instruction and workshops in oil and pastel are available to students in her home
studio and she conducts 3-4 workshops per year. Please email her with any comments or questions.
