Denbigh Army Surplus: The Home of Genuine Military
Surplus
Hello and welcome to the home of Denbigh Army Surplus one of the few remaining
genuine military surplus warehouses in the UK.
My name Is Mick and I own and run Denbigh Army Surplus with my wife Jan son's
Paul and Richard, ably assisted by Marion who has worked with us since we started
nearly 20 years ago. That's right, an Army Surplus business that's being going
for 20 years. There are not many of us about and there seem to be fewer with
each year that passes. Can you remember the last time there was a proper Army
Surplus shop in your town, or a Surplus stall on your local market? There are
reasons why we are still going strong and many others have gone by the wayside,
which I will explain in the next few paragraphs.
I was a High school teacher before I started Denbigh Army Surplus. Like a lot
of people I was fed up with what I was doing and decided to try my hand at something
new. A friend of mine mentioned over a pint of beer that he dabbled in buying
surplus government stock from Ministry of Defence auctions. So, I thought, give
it a try. What can I lose? By this time I was taking a year out of teaching
and dabbling in a few things to earn some money. Alas, the Ministry of Defence
auctions finished about 10 years ago , but it was an exciting introduction to
trading in Army Surplus which has stood me in good stead ever since. Firstly,
you are involved in buying in bulk. Secondly, you are having to deal with large
parcels of surplus ranging from brand new, right through the quality range to
total scrap. This involves grading the items for sale. Fortunes are made and
lost at this point. There are three crucial points necessary to keep a Surplus
retailer in business.
You must have stock available for immediate sale. The surplus trade is renowned
for good lines coming along and then disappearing a couple of months later.
You may have bought from a trader and are still waiting for your buy. Why? Because
he can't source it. I now have seven 40ft shipping containers and a 2000 sq
ft warehouse full of sought after genuine military surplus. All my listings
on eBay are stock items for dispatch within 1 to 3 days.
Grading and quality of goods. This is absolutely crucial. I have been selling
mail order for the last 18 years. It is vital that when a customer opens his/her
parcel that the initial emotion is pleasure not depression. We only send out
good quality items that we are happy with. We can only do that because we have
large stocks to choose from.
Stock levels. With the large volumes of stock we hold and the variety of stock
we have amassed from buying over a 20 year period. Seven 40ft shipping containers
and a 2000 sq ft warehouse full of good quality genuine issue stock. We can
ride out the peaks and troughs of availability and still be trading while others
leave the trade from lack of supply.
We are still trading 20 years on because we are good at what we do and are
sensitive to out customers needs.
