My name is Doctor Beth (an alias of course). I've been reading and collecting fanzines for over 20 years. I started reading Star Trek then branched off to Starsky and Hutch and it took off from there. I actively read and collect the following fandoms:
- Battlestar Galactica (old), Dr. Who (new and old), Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis, Voyagers, Airwolf, Emergency
My old (now retired) fandoms are: Forever Knight, Robin of Sherwood, Stasrky and Hutch, Star Trek. I am still keeping my favorites, but am thinning out my collections.
I prefer gen fanzines which are true to the show.
On a personal level, I am married to a wonderful man who doesn't mind my obsession with fanzines. He does share my love of Science Fiction. I also have 3 children: (ages 6, 4 and 2). The 6 year old buy loves Star Wars and Outer Space. I also work full time as a Scientist (actually Nanotechnology, believe it or not).
Frequently Asked Questions:
1. What is a fanzine? A fanzine is a collection of stories written by fans of their favroite TV show.or movie. These stories have usually been edited and are complete. In general they are of much higher quality than fanfiction published online. They are usually bound which makes them much easier to read.
2. What types of stories are there. There are several types of stories:
- Gen: These stories are similar to the show and characters.
- Hurt Comfort (my favorite): This is a common theme where one character is hurt (physically or emtionally) and the others help or comfort them.
- Romance (also called Shipper): These stories focus on a relationship between a male and female character in the show. This may (or may not) be considered "canon". An example would be Jack and Sam from Stargate SG-1.
- Adult: These stories usually featiure heterosexual relationships betweenmale and female characters and may have adult or sexual situations.
- SLASH: These stories feature homsexual relations between 2 male characters. These can feature romantic and sexual relationships and can be quite graphic.
3. Do you combine shipping? Yes.
- S&H in the US. If you buy more than one fanzine, the S&H is $11 for Priority Mail shipping in a Flat rate box. I can fit up to 8 fanzines (depending on size) in this box.
- S&H Internationally: I can ship up to 5 fanzines in a Global Priority Mail Flat Rate box for $41. I am limited by customs regulations
4. How do you obtain your fanzines? Several different sources:
- I am selling off part of my collection.
- I am selling some on Consignment
- I buy out collections from estates
- I attend a fanzine convention called Media West held every Memoial Weekend in Lansing Michigan.
5. What is your favorite fanzine? That's a hard question to answer, but here are a few:
- Star Trek TOS: "Don't Tell It To the Captain!" This is an absolutely hilarious story where Spock is injured right before a major inspection and the whople crew conspires to hide him from the inspection party.
- Stargate SG--1: "Gateways 1" (Volumes 2-5 were also very good, but 1 was best). Hurt comfort at it's best. This is a 500+ page volume which is out of print and very hard to find.
- Emergency: "KMG 365 Volumes 1-5". Excellent stories very similar to the show.
- Dr. Who: "Another Life" Based on the David Tennant Doctor, and excellent long story.
6. Do you take fanzines on consignment? Extremely reluctantly due to the hassle.
7. Can I send you a list of fanzines I am looking for? Yes. I have many, many fanzines not listed in my store. It is quite possible I may have a specific fanzine or can look for it.
8. Why do you sometimes take days to answer email? I have a real life revolving around my family and career.
9. What if I have a problem with my order? Please contact me and I will try to resolve it as soon as possble.
10. Why don't you accept returns? Sometimes people would buy the fanzine, copy the story they want and then try to return it. This is unaccepptable..
