Welcome and Intro

This is a nice opportunity to intoduce myself. I was always fascinated by artifacts of past generations (probably to learn more about my parents and grandparents lifestyle and values) but never bought any antiques because my "no frills' lifestyle (no frivilous expenditures, no clutter) didn't allow it. Then years later I started accumulating a few "little" things - I started with a bottle collection. When my house reached the overflowing point I realized that if I sold some of the accumulation I could buy others as my tastes and interests evolved. I rented a small dealer space in a local antique mall (a spare time hobby) and was off and running. I think that's how all antique dealers get started. The fun of the research, the hunt and the find just take over.

History

I went to a yard sale and found a ragged doll that looked like she could transport you back in time, mixed in with the kitchen stuff on the "dollar" blanket. It was in a far worse area than I had anticipated and I felt uncomfortable---I couldn't get anyone's attention to buy the doll and wasn't sure that I wanted to (they looked kind of scary) so I left without her. Weeks later I bought my first doll book and to my intense frustration was able to ID the doll I had passed up as an Izannah Walker. (New England is a pretty rich source of authentic attic finds.) This of course fostered an intense interest in researching dolls. I felt they had so much history and character--I could just see the generations of children living in other times with different values, but children just the same, sharing a love of their inanimate companions that totally transcends cultural differences. I shut down the general antique space and started one devoted primarily to dolls, with a few toys, accessories, children's items, textiles, photographica etc. thrown in. Now when I've researched something and get caught up in it I buy it---then sell a few things to pay for it. So I have a constantly flowing inventory--I always need to sell some things in order to buy the find of the moment. Of course I've had to sell many things I wish I could have kept but I can't keep them all and am happy to enjoy them and then place them with people who will appreciate them and won't try to repaint and over-restore them. My ultimate collecting goal is to get an Izannah Walker,a Leo Moss, an early peg wooden, and eventually something from the 1700's! At this point all are way out of my league. I have a lot of things in the shop that you would love that I may or may not have time to list on ebay. I'm trying to set up a website in my non-existent spare time but never quite get to it. I try to find things with provenance whenever possible as this greatly enhances their appeal for me. I like things in their authentic "lived in, played with, unadorned" state, fresh from the attic is the best. Needless to say I love on-site estate auctions, the ability to see where the children who owned the dolls lived and who they were.

One of my favorites:a Mason & Taylor
