"Alicia's Story"
Welcome to Alicia's Story. Enter with good faith and full heart
for only the gentle and loving enter here!
You have stumbled upon a place filled with caring, love, and hope.
The blessing of helping this little angel of God is tremendous; it
not only gives you pleasure, but it provides essentials for a
small hurt angel that needs all the caring and love she can get.
The blessing of being a Alicia's gaurdian angel is strong for the
gaurdians, but tenfold for the angel. This is important because
Alicia has valuable lessons to teach and share that
are important in this world and are very easy to lose....
empathy, courage, honor.... and so much more.
Alicia's Struggle for Life
Alicia was born August 19, 1998. At birth, she had to be revived. Two true
knots in her umbilical cord had deprived her of oxygen causing brain
damage and almost death.
Alicia was a very quiet baby, she didn't cry out or make any sound. I found this
different but not alarming because she was such a content baby. As time
progressed, I noticed that Alicia did not seem to be aware of her environment
visually or audiologically. (Blind and Deaf) Playing with
toys with her, talking to her, and changes all met the same reception ---
nothing. She simply had her eyes open, but no focus. She did not
respond to sound. At 4 months I told her pediatrician that I thought
something was wrong. He assured me that she was a little behind but not
to worry. All babies have their own pace. I went home and deliberated
about this for two weeks. Then I took Alicia to a different
pediatrician. He immediately referred a neonatal specialist, and that
was the beginning of our journey. After five years of specialist,
testing, and therapies a clear diagnosis for Alicia's condition has still
not been given. We know she has a chromosome disorder - Inverted
Chromosome 15. This is a precursor for Autism. Actually we realized the
autism first and further testing showed the Inverted Chromosome 15 as the
culprit. Her eyes have the capability to see, and her ears have the
capability to hear, but she is cortically blind and deaf which means her
brain doesn't understand the messages being sent from the eyes and ears.
Physically, she has no muscle tone (hypotonia) and could not move her
head, arms, or torso for the first 2 years of her life. I had to be very
watchful that she did not get facedown in her blankets and smother as she
could not even lift her head!
All credit due to God, we started Alicia in physical therapy at 9 months of
age and now, at age 8,she can walk, run, jump, and climb like any child!
This is a miracle! It's God's Blessing!
But we still face
challenges. Alicia's brain was deprived of oxygen and doesn't work to
it's fullest capability. HyperBaric Oxygen Treatments will help
Alicia to achieve her highest level of comprehension and help her to
function in our world. But,it will costs approximately $20,000.00 to get
Alicia the amount of treatments she needs and it is not paid for by
insurances. It is my challenge to find a way for her to get this
treatment while she is young and her brain will respond. I'm her
mother,and I work, but it is impossible to fulfill these financial
responsibilities alone. I've stressed and I've prayed. I feel that as
long as I'm doing the best I can the Lord will provide. I implore you to
help if you can. Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatments will help my child's brain comprehend
what she is seeing and hearing. There is even a possibility for full recovery!
