Gemstones have been sought after and treasured throughout history. The fascination with gemstones is ageless. Beauty, brilliance, and mystery surround each unique stone. In modern times, gemstones still hold our fascination as evidence of their popularity around the globe.
Emeralds: Emeralds were traded in 4000 BC in the worlds earliest known gem market in Babylon. Emeralds belong to the beryl family. Its green color is due to trace amounts of the elements Chromium and Vanadium. Emerald is the only stone, besides Topaz, that is listed as in all of the ancient birthstone tables. Emerald is the modern and traditional birthstone for May.
Amethyst: Purple is considered a royal color so its not surprising that Amethyst is in demand. Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz and the most valued member of the quartz family. It must be purple to be amethyst, but it can display a range of shades including deep purple, light lilac, lavender and mauve. Top quality amethyst is a deep medium purple with rose-colored flashes. Amethyst is the birthstone for Febuary.
Citrine: Named after the French word Citrin, meaning lemon. The color of citrine ranges from golden yellow to yellowish orange, to a deep red wine color. In the past the red wine colored stones were the most valuable, but as of today, the more vivid yellows and oranges are the most popular. Citrine is the birthstone for the month of November, sharing the title with topaz.
Topaz: Topaz is a valued crystal gemstone variety of the mineral aluminum fluosilicate. It is a hard stone, only two steps lower than the diamond. Topaz can be broken easily because its crystal structure has a perfect line of cleavage. White topaz is often confused for a diamond.
Gemstone Weight
Gemstone weight is measured in carats. This unit of measurement originates from the ancient use of carob seeds to weigh gems in the bazaars of the Middle East and Asia. In 1913 the United States standardized the carat to the equivalent of .2 grams. Generally, as the carat weight of gemstones increases so does its price per carat. Larger gemstones are always rarer than smaller ones therefore more valuable.
