I am a Physicist that teaches telecommunications to large businesses in Arizona. Oh, I also buy and sell rare coins on eBay. |

I am a Coin collector of almost 35 years, since I was only 8 years old. I love early "Bust" coinage, pre 1808 Americana. I am always looking to buy higher grade and/or scarce Bust coins. I consider myself an expert on coin grading and authenticating American coins. Here are my opinions on the major grading services: PCGS and NGC have the strictest grading. For coins from G-4 to VF-20 they grade properly. For all other higher grade coins, they under-grade. However, they over-grade prestige coins, 'curated' treasure coins and coins submitted by large dealers.. ANACS is in my opinion the best overall grader in the business. I trust the grading standards of this company as accurate in all grades. Thus far I have not noticed favoritism grading. SEGS, NTC and PCI- Their grading standards are generally good, however, their grading standards vary for different types of coins ie bust, seated, modern etc.. ACG is the worst grading company. They over-grade coins for large dealers, under-grade coins for small submitters and do not know how to spot fake coins or cleaned coins. Only experts in grading and authenticating coins should ever buy ACG encapsulated coins. below is a list of the (R) RARITY SCALE:R‑1 Common R‑2 Not So Common R‑3 Scarce R‑4 Very Scarce (population est. at 76‑200) R‑5 Rare (31‑75) R‑6 Very Rare (13‑30) R‑7 Extremely rare (4‑12) R‑8 Unique or Nearly So (1, 2 or 3) |
