Hello and welcome to my "About Me"
page. My name is Gayle Herring, and I live in Harriman, Tennessee,
which is a small town located at the base of Walden Ridge of the
Cumberland Escarpment in the foothills of the Appalachian, Cumberland
and Smoky Mountains.
After majoring in art in college,
I did a 4-year stint in the US Air Force, during which I spent 3
years stationed in Misawa, Japan. After the Air Force, I've had
a varied day-job career. Until I tried working with glass, my main
interests were fiber arts and painting. Since beginning lampworking,
I've not touched my loom or paint. Now I spend every spare moment
I can at the torch.
I've had the pleasure of taking quite
a few classes from Deanna Griffin Dove and Brad Pearson. Being close
to Chattanooga is great because I can slip down to Marjorie Langston's
lampworking retreats in the spring and fall. I attend The Gathering,
whenever possible, and Hot Times in the Mountains, in Asheville,
North Carolina.

I am a self-representing
artist (SRA).
This means that I am representing myself in selling glass art that
I make.
If you are tired of wading through
thousands and thousands of auctions when you search for beads, try
putting the initials SRA in your search - for example:
lampwork SRA
Melinda Melanson has a FAQ page about lampwork and
Self-Representing Artists that is quite informative. You can visit
it in another window by clicking here.
You can also visit the registry of SRA's by clicking here.
Please support self-representing artists on ebay
rather than buying lampwork beads from mass-production fronts. Endorsing
self-representing artists is vital to keeping artisans an integral
part of American culture. Life for everyone is enriched beyond measure
by the arts.
This is my lampworking companion, Kira Jane. I gave up on
keeping her out of the studio. So now she stays content behind
me either sleeping or ignoring me, but adamant about being
near me.
