GIBBON CONSERVATION CENTER

THANK YOU FOR VISITING !

Hi, I'm Patti, the Assistant to the Director, and here is my husband, Gaylen. I have been volunteering at the Gibbon Conservation Center, GCC, (formerly International Center for Gibbon Studies) since March 1993. GCC, founded in 1976 by Director Alan Mootnick, is a nonprofit organization in southern California. Gibbons are tree-dwelling small apes that are considered the world's greatest acrobats. They can leap 50 feet at 35 mph while in the forest canopy 200 feet up. Gibbons are monogamous (rare in primates) and walk upright in trees and when on the ground. In the trees, they move around by brachiating--hanging under branches and swinging to another branch with their long arms. Gibbons have a wonderfully musical call that can project 2 miles through the forest.

PURPOSES AND GOALS OF GCC

We are devoted to saving the small ape from extinction. Gibbons live in the dwindling rain forest of Southeast Asia, where their habitat is being destroyed at the rate of 32 acres per minute. We house nearly 40 gibbons, the second largest group of gibbons in the world (other than their countries of origin), and have had success in breeding 6 of the 11 living species. GCC functions world-wide as a consultant to zoos, museums, government agencies and scientists. We obtain gibbons kept singly in zoos and place them in our breeding program. GCC supports gibbon rescue facilities in Thailand and Vietnam, and field studies in Java. We offer lecture tours to students and other groups to educate the public. GCC provides a captive haven for gibbons as a complement to protecting them in the wild.

SIGNIFICANT BIRTHS AT GCC

Written by Alan Mootnick

The Gibbon Conservation Center(GCC) is proud to announce the birth of a female pileated gibbon (Hylobates pileatus) on 21 October 2005. There are only 14 pileated gibbons housed in 3 institutions in the Western Hemisphere--we house nearly half of them. Only 30,000 remain in the wild with only 12 known captive breeding pairs worldwide. We are also pleased to announce the births of 2 Javan gibbons, (Hylobates moloch). The first female Javan gibbon born in the USA was born her on 28 Aug. 2003. And on 5 June 2004, our other pair of Javan gibbons gave birth to a male. We are very pleased that all are doing well. There are only ten Javan gibbons housed in the USA; all are currently housed at GCC, which is one of only four institutions in the world that houses breeding pairs of Javan gibbons. There are only seven captive breeding pairs worldwide, with an estimation of fewer than 100 Javan gibbons housed in institutions world wide. This gibbon, which is one of the rarest of the 11 species of gibbon, is native to central and western Java (which is one of the most densely populated islands in the world), where they live in fragmented rainforest. The current census of the Javan gibbon in the wild is estimated to be less than 2000 individuals. GCC is proud to have added 6 more to the world-wide census of this rare species.
