Welcome to my "About Me" page.
After many years as a production potter, I changed direction completely and started sewing and making teddy bears. I have been making bears now for about 14+ years, having started after a trip to England in 1991, where I noticed bears everywhere. I decided to make a bear pattern to add to my commercial craft patterns, and as the saying goes "I was hooked". I have received several awards over the years and have had photos of my bears in several of the bear magazines. I have also had write-ups in three different bear books.
2005 was an incredible year for me. I was honoured to have one of my "Young Lady" bears grace the cover for the April 2005 issue of Teddy Bear & Friends, with a wonderful accompanying article and photos. Also that Spring I was chosen third place winner in the Steiff North America contest for my entry, "Timmothy and his teddy". I absolutely love what I do, and can't really call it work. I have always been handy with a sewing machine and needle, and used to make all my own clothes when I was a teen, and doll clothes before that. Of course, now I don't even have time to shorten my slacks, or sew on missing buttons! I only make about two bears a week, spending many hours on each bear and his/her clothing, only stopping when I am satisfied - and I'm very fussy.
Most of my bears tend to be girls, with the occasional boy. They are nearly always clothed. I usually make the clothes myself, and sometimes use thrift shop finds that I alter to fit. Lately I have started using some of my collection of white vintage girls dresses and christening gowns. They really add a lovely touch to a bear.
I hope you enjoyed getting to know me a little better, and please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
Thank you, Jane Perala
