My grandmother, who lived during the great depression always believed that you don't have to spend alot to get something nice. She was also tight with money, in fact she spent years deciding if she wanted to "invest" in a kitchen paring knife. She always managed to talk herself out of a purchase! In her day, the downtown department store in Fort Wayne, Indiana had two levels. The top level was the high priced retail items and in the basement, dubbed "the bargin basement" contained the same items at a greatly reduced price. No question where she did her shopping! She certainly passed her spending ways to me.
I am a hunter/jumper trainer and riding instructor currently living in Indiana. I am shocked at the high retail prices for horse equipment in the current catalogs. Discovering ebay has been a god send! Here I am able to buy everything I need at half or less than retail. Since I am a professional I need alot of equipment and this is a great source. I also love antiques and again go through sticker shock at the local antique malls. Ebay has been a great source for well-priced antiques as well. I also recently began selling horse equipment and antiques on ebay. Many of my auctions begin at 99 cents. I start with low prices and let the buyers determine its worth.
