Refereeing at the 2003 Eastern Olympic Trials
|
My name's George Phillips and I've been interested in boxing since Sonny Liston was Heavyweight Champ! Then this brash knucklehead came along named Cassius Clay and boxing became embedded in my spirit. I started collecting boxing memorabilia back then and never stopped. No baseball, soccer, basketball or ping-pong for me. No sir, the boxing bug bit and there's no turning back. Since then I've become involved in Amateur Boxing, first as a certified Referee and Judge for USA Boxing, and then becoming Chief of Officials for CT. I've refereed and judged hundreds of bouts and been lucky enough to be used up to and including the finals in The Eastern Olympic Trials, The US Men's and Women's Nationals, The Men's Under 19 Nationals, The National Golden Gloves, The PAL Nationals, and The Jr. Olympic Nationals. I've also had the privilege of serving as the Jr. Olympic Chief of Officials for Region 1 for the last 2 years, which consists of New York, New Jersey and New England. I've also just joined the Board of Directors for the Connecticut Boxing Hall of Fame. I've applied for my Pro. license too, so let's see if the luck can continue. I sure hope so.
In my spare time (sic), I've accumulated quite a bit of Boxing memorabilia. Some of it was picked up in the early days of E Bay, some of it was from flea markets, garage sales, and other collectors. When my computer room was full (except for a small path to the computer), my wife finally said, "Don't you have enough boxing items?"........(pause)....."Yeah, I guess I have a couple of things here and there", I answered. "Why don't you get rid of some of the stuff to make room for more stuff. We sure could use the money." Well......she was right. So in 1999, I started my first website, www.glassjawboxingantiques.com . And my wife, daughter and I started to go as vendors to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, NY every year. We sold some stuff, but probably bought as much back from others. The original website was ok, but didn't get too much traffic. So this year, I noticed E Bay had stores in additon to the regular auctions. Hey, it was worth a shot, so I opened up the store on E Bay this spring, and we've been selling ever since. I'm getting some regular customers now, and I really appreciate the enthusiasm that others share in this sport, like I do! I want you to be happy with your purchase, it really feels good when you get a good bargain and you put it up on your bar room mantle to show friends and reminisce. So don't beat me up when you make your "Best Offers", there's many items I'm barely making anything on, but I am making a lot of new friends on E Bay, so let's just keep going! Now "Get off those ropes and find a great bargain at Glass Jaw Boxing Antiques" !!
