McDougall Christmas 2005 weight

I am a collector of art glass paperweights -primarily from Scotland. Perthshire was my favourite maker until they closed their factory. Perthshire general range pieces were easy to spot with their super crisp star canes and perfect twists. Their simple canes often had in their centers another cane in tiny perfect detail. This 'cane-within-a-cane' required a jeweler's loupe to see. The color palette they used was often rather pastel though they did produce weights occasionally in a 'hot red' that I was very fond of. I particularly liked their picture canes which they produced by bundling tiny glass rods.

The Perthshire factory closed on my birthday. What a rotten present! I scraped the money together to get the last weight they produced for LH Selman. It was a limited edition of 50 pieces. I was happy to have the weight but very sad I would see no more weights from my favourite maker. 

Imagine my elation when I found out Peter McDougall had set up on his own. He was the gaffer at Perthshire. He has continued the Perthshire tradition in producing weights of exceptional quality with incredible cane detail and precision. He has gone a step further by producing weights in richer colours and his 'simple' canes in greater variety and complexity. His general range often features intricate latticinio twists or twists incased in latticinio. His complex canes are bundles similar to antique Baccarat in eyepopping complexity. Once again the jeweler's loupe is needed to see it all.
