Celebrity Handbag Auction
to benefit the victims of the L’Aquila earthquake

On April 6, 2009, the deadliest Italian earthquake in over 15 years struck the Abruzzo mountain region of Italy, with the town of L’Aquila at its epicenter. The toll was grim with nearly 300 people killed, more than 1,000 injured, and as many as 65,000 residents displaced. Many of those who lost their homes are still living in tent cities.

GlobalGiving.org is an organization that connects donors with community-based projects that need support. The GlobalGiving Italy Earthquake Relief and Recovery Fund focuses on various efforts to rehabilitate the Abruzzo region, which include rebuilding communities, reestablishing local markets to stimulate the local economy and delivering basic necessities such as food, blankets and clothing.

Salvatore Ferragamo is proud to partner with GlobalGiving in this ongoing relief effort. On June 2, Ferragamo menswear designer, Massimiliano Giornetti, along with Debi Mazar and Adrian Grenier, will host a star studded event at the Salvatore Ferragamo boutique in Beverly Hills. Ten percent of the evening’s sales will benefit the Relief and Recovery Fund, while Debi Mazar will lead an enthusiastic group of fashionable and philanthropic influencers in a live auction.

Now is your chance to support the cause with the Celebrity Handbag Auction. Ferragamo handbags generously donated and signed by Madonna, Demi Moore, Jennifer Aniston, Gwyneth Paltrow, Eva Longoria, Lucy Liu, Dita Von Teese, Lily Tomlin, and Marisa Tomei, as well as a Kenny Scharf customized handbag, donated by Debi Mazar are available for you to bid on, while supporting this most worthy cause.

The auction officially begins at 7pm PST on June 2, 2009 and 100% of the proceeds will be donated to GlobalGiving’s Italy Earthquake Recovery and Relief Fund.

The GlobalGiving Italy Earthquake Relief and Recovery Fund.
The deadliest earthquake in Italy in over 15 years left L’Aquila and the surrounding areas without water. Almost 500 aftershocks, some of which were strong enough to move furniture in Rome. At least 17,000 people are living in makeshift tent cities. About 28,000 people were left homeless. About 15,000 of those were moved to over 100 different hotels. Others either slept in their cars or in over 3,600 tents that were set up with about 40 kitchens. GlobalGiving is working with Slow Food Italy, which has a chapter in Abruzzo, and the US-based UNICO. Both organizations are in the process of assessing needs and providing basic supplies and necessities to the earthquake victims. You can support relief efforts in the Abruzzo region by bidding in this auction, or making a direct donation at www.globalgiving.org..
