The House of Christmas Present

| My name is Nancy and I was born in New England. As is true of so many people, Christmas has always been my favorite season. Every year it seems I add more Christmas trees to my home. I have had as many as 33 Christmas trees up and decorated throughout my house. Each one holds a special place in my heart as each has its own theme, personality or purpose. But there is one tree I keep up all year round in my breakfast nook. It's adorned with Americana ornaments and is surrounded by photographs of everyone dear to me who has been in the military. Each morning as I have my coffee it reminds me of all the great men and women who continue to value our freedoms over their own safety and comfort. I think of those families who bravely wait for their return. And, of course, of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country. |

My love of Christmas has many meanings…Our Lord’s birthday, the greatest acts of giving, Christmases past, and future ones to come. My love of this beautiful holiday are greatly influenced by memories of my father. On the outside he would pretend to be somewhat of a Scrooge. But, as Christmas day would draw nearer, he would let us open a present every night because deep down he was just a big kid at heart, and he couldn't wait to see the smiling faces of his children that Christmas sharing always brings. Those thoughts are mingled with warmth and togetherness, laughter and security, sugary smells and tender hugs. Then some years ago, shortly after losing my mother, I found myself standing in front of a life-sized Santa at a local Christmas shop. As the tears ran down my face I just kept telling Santa all I wanted for Christmas was my mom back, and though Father Christmas couldn't grant me my wish, a small miracle did take place. I ended up meeting the owners of that quaint little shop and was hired as a part time sales person. Surrounded by all the joy and love Christmas has to offer seemed to ease my sorrow and brought me to the realization that this is what I wanted to do with my life, to surround myself with the things that I love and to hopefully help bring some joy to others. |
