FAQ
|
What is "plein air" ? |
"Plein air" is a
French term, meaning "in the open air" or "outdoors." When paint was
first packaged in tubes and no longer had to be
ground by hand, artists began to take their equipment on location to
paint. These artists were called "plein air painters".
They were able to investigate the colors in the landscape by means
of direct observation, instead of working from
sketches. This led to a new understanding of light and color which
is the hallmark of impressionism. This movement was in France in the 1870's
and later.

|
Is the canvas stretched? |
Not normally.
Greaves
usually paints on
Raymar
canvas panels which are
canvas glued to masonite panels. The glue is archival and will not
degenerate. With the canvas mounted, it does not flex as stretched
canvas does. For oil paint, this is more desirable since the paint is far
less likely to crack. If another ground is used, such as stretched
canvas, or another panel or surface, it will be noted in the
description with details of the specific artwork listed.

Will you let me know if my shipment is delayed? |
Yes! If Greaves is traveling,
and she does so frequently, the date of shipment will be posted at
the top of this page. Greaves ranges far and wide to take advantage of
outstanding locations and delivers that inspiration to you in her plein air work. Often, she is "painting her life" as she visits and
travels with family and friends. |
