Greykittie lives in the Big Woods in the Pacific Northwest in a little house filled with books and yarn and cats and STUFF! Lots of STUFF!!
Something must be done with all this STUFF!! The stuff has gathered over the years from herself and her Mom and GrandMoms and Five Thousand Aunts and a few Friends and an assortment of cousins, there's really a LOT of STUFF in this little house.
You know the kind of house I mean, if you want to sit down, you have to move a small pile of STUFF! If you want to spend the night, first you have to take 22 layers of fabric off the bed (Greykittie stores her fabric on unused beds, it's perfect, visitors have remarked on the unusual height of the beds in this house, all you have to do is put a bedspread on top and it looks fine).
Most of the STUFF is Fabric and Lace and Old Magazines and Knitting Instructions and Crochet Schmatics, Designs for Quilts, drawers filled with Clippings from Magazines with recipes for making chow chow, which she remembers as Terrible Nasty Stuff, and Spare Knitting Needles, Packets of Beads, Embroidery Floss and old candles to be melted down and made into fire starters. Pinecones all over the yard, of course...
Now I wouldn't want to give you the wrong idea about the STUFF. The reason all the Greykitties have saved this wonderful STUFF over the years is because they like it, and might need it, life is spent looking irritably for "that recipe for Rum Cake", that's a mighty tasty cake!! But where might I find it? Perhaps it's down cellar in a box of bowling balls, no, I found that lady who actually collects bowling balls, and I gave them all to her, and they look very pretty in her yard, different colored orbs peeking out from under the petunias...
And now, we have computers! And scanners! We can become organized!! Once an object is found, we can scan it, (it's mostly clippings and pages and other flat things) and then we can sell it, and someone else will have it and enjoy it and KNOW WHERE IT IS!!
And when the last Greykittie goes on to the big cat frolic in the sky, there will not be a pitable group of men staring at a clipping for rum cake, wondering what to do with it. You know what they would do with it. The Round File! Oh No, Not the Round File, someone needs that recipe!
Can you visualize those men looking at a sweater schematic? Turning it this way and that, scratching their heads, peeking at one another? What is it? What should we do with it? Worry, Worry, you do not want to annoy Greykitties, even dead ones, life can become unpleasant.
It's much better to organize it, put it on disks, then pass it on, and put the disks in a box marked with big black letters, FOR THE NEXT GREYKITTIE! Because sometimes, a greykittie doesn't come along for a couple of generations, and if there is a compatible computer and a box of discs, stored somewhere out of the way, it's all there waiting for her.
So Greykittie needs to Get Busy!!! Spend less time looking for that tiny hairpin lace thing that she used to have, and more time cataloging and selling, thereby spreading joy throughout the land!!
And as she moves through the piles, much desired and missed objects will surface! Like that little doll with the funny eyes that Aunt Marie made her when she was a toddler. It's here, somewhere, much worn, slightly chewed on the edges, but probably up in the attic in a box marked Ping Pong. |
Now, Greykittie's Passion is Sewing!! She simply can't resist a Good Sewing Pattern, you might say she is a Pattern Junkie, so she likes to have a lot of them, so she can share. She likes to read them, and talk about them, and compare methods of sleeve making, and an interesting cut for a skirt just fills her with desire. Her fingers begin to itch and her scissors begin to slide toward her, fabric on the shelf begins to hum, and pretty soon a skirt is born! For who? Well someone will need it, if not Greykittie, an aunt or child or someone, never fear, the good thing with large prolific families is the sheer size of the population, that skirt will fit someone!
Greykittie does sell a LOT of Sewing Patterns, here's some examples from her store: |
