It's no coincidence that I came to trade in phonograph records; as long as I can remember, I have always had a phonograph. And it was never a 'Close 'N Play'; sometimes it was a fairly sophisticated component system and sometimes a simple suitcase type for children. But I have always had a love for music and a fascination for the black disc that goes round and round . . .

  One of my fondest memories is of myself as a very young child. I had been sick, and managed to put myself down for a nap. When I woke up, my older sister had a surprise for me; a stack of '45's tied together in a hair ribbon! Well, I was in my glory! I can't remember all the discs, but I know Herb Alpert's solo tune 'This Guy's In Love With You' was one of them.

  I want to share the enjoyment this hobby has given me. I want to get young people excited about this as a unique pastime that can be enjoyed for relatively little expense. It can be done a number of ways; for instance either by collecting a certain era, say doo wop music or early rhythm & blues, or by focusing on one artist or band throughout their career. Composers like Burt Bacharach have had their material covered by a wide variety of successful performers over the years, and their work seems to come back into vogue time and time again. Whatever you choose to collect, be sure to enjoy yourself and not get too hung up on the chase. The joy of this endeavor is definitely in the journey!
