New Versus Pre-Owned Watches

Just like an automobile, as soon as you purchase a new watch and wear it a week, it becomes a pre-owned watch and its value drops to the trading price on the World Market. This New Value depends on your specific model and make and can be as little as 20% to 80% of the suggested retail. A frightening thought...here you just invested $10,000 in a watch only to find out next week it's worth $2,000!

However, unlike the used car, a pre-owned or used fine watch can be restored or in many cases just cleaned and refinished to a 99% "Like New" condition. Once the pre-owned watch has been professionally restored to its original condition, it is sold at a fair market value as a pre-owned watch. In many cases, the watch will continue to appreciate in value as opposed to depreciating.

As an example, a gents 18K stainless steel Rolex Date just retails for $5,100 and in many cases can be purchased for 10'70 off or approximately $4600. Now! that one year old gents Rolex will trade in the used market for approximately $2200 to $2400. A dealer purchases it, spends $200 to $300 to make it Like New and then retails the same watch for $2900 to $3200. This equates to a 3~% savings on the watch compared to is suggested retail price and you own the watch at a level that will be appreciating from its used market price and will recover to is purchase price within 2 to 3 years.

  • Does it keep time accurately?
