I'm Helen Daly, part owner to Crooked Beat Records, a specialty online CD/record store. I, along with my husband Bill opened a storefront in Raleigh, NC in 1997. We are currently operating our store in the Washington DC area. We opened a storefront in Dc in 2004. Our store specializes in mostly underground punk/indie/music and other hard to find music that exists outside the radar of the mainstream.There is so much good music out there these days. Though, unfortunately, it is never heard on the radio or on MTV. As a collector of music myself I try to search out and expose the "underground indie bands" (for lack of a better term)that are on smaller labels and for some reason or another are not normally heard very often. I really believe the artists on alot of these independent labels we stock have much more freedom to create music that is more expressive, sincere and less formulated. This enables one to hear music that tends to be less predictable and more true to life. True to life in a way that says it is all pure expression whether one is listening to virtuoso jazz musicians,ranting punk and folk poets or just an artist trying to communicate a thought or sound through music. This makes the music more like art in a way that is both exciting and educational to the extent that less emphasis is placed on sound alikes, image and sales volume as what most of the major record labels tend to encourage. I also carry alot of older rock/soul/rockabilly/reggae/ska/surf music plus other various genres from the 1950-70's.
