Chainsaw Carvings


Greetings from  central  Massachusetts!  My name is John  and I am a part-time chainsaw woodcarver.  I made my first carving in 1988 and I've been chainsaw carving since then.   I carve mostly bears in different poses. 

 I also carve an occasional owl, cat, raccoon, pig, frog, and rabbit.  I carve white pine logs. I try to pay attention to detail when I carve. I do not use templates or patterns when I carve, but sometimes I will use a picture or a figurine as a reference.   Most often I burn my carvings with a torch to remove "fuzzies" and give some color and depth to the carving.  I use glass eyes in my woodcarvings which seems to give them a life-like quality. I finish my carvings with  both matte and shiny finishes.
