Porcelain painting goes back as far as the Ming Dynasty in China (1368-1644). By the 1100’s this art made its way to other Asian Countries. During that time, traders brought the secret of porcelain making to Europe. There it because very popular to the upper class. It was not until the 1600’s that the general public of Europe could afford porcelain. France, Germany, Italy and England became major producers of European porcelain. In 1771 a porcelain factory developed near Limoges which became one of the largest producers of porcelain in Europe. German porcelain was established in 1710 in a factory of Meissen. Dresden china comes from this area. Porcelain painting became popular in this country during the late 1880’s. It has been handed down from mother to daughter and friend to friend for years now. There are very few china painters who carry on art these days.
