Hipasbury Design     Brian Walsh is somewhat of an anomaly of sorts when it comes to his sense of design with vintage textiles.  Using vintage period fabrics, Brian mixes and matches very rare and prestigious patterns into true art form pillows and women’s bags.  Art forms that have a nostalgic collectibility allure and possess a popular recycling and repurposing element that make it trendily “green”.   Brian’s designs are inspired by his passion for vintage “Barkcloth” fabric. Many remember Barkcloth from their grandmothers homes or hotels on Miami Beach or Hawaii in the 1920‘s - 1950‘s.  However, Barkcloth goes back much further than that. Originally made from the bark of a tree, hammered and used to create clothing for indigenous people in Polynesia hundreds of years ago. In the mid 1800’s it was  produced as a fabric called “Cretonne”. By the 1920’s the United States was producing what was now being called Barkcloth in mills from New England to North Carolina, using the very best vats and dyes to create designs on fabrics, now made of cotton. Referred to as Barkcloth for its thick and nubby texture reminiscent of the indigenous barkcloth of Polynesia. Still today these fabrics are amazing in their strength and durability. By Brian‘s testament, they just don’t make fabrics like this anymore.  Barkcloth was created as a almost indestructible fabric, meant for washing and noted for it’s futuristic approach to durability in a wash and wear world.  Barkcloth was sold in high end designer show rooms of the period and in Five and Dimes across America, it appealed to every budget.   Barkcloth designs played a major part in the Art Deco influences of the 1920’s - late 1930’s, which brought a burst of tropical themes, swagging garlands and shapely designs.  The 1940’s held a more Carmen Miranda exotic appeal that had taken the fabric industry by storm, tropical flowers and floral and fauna were all the rage in a style that Brian bills “Tropachic”.  These fabrics were popular upholstered on period rattan and bamboo furniture and as draperies. By the 1950’s it was more about a coming of age for barkcloth, the Fabulous 50’s was both hypnotic and brazenly bold, designers were brave with color and modern influences.  Geometrics, Amoeba and Calder designs were leading America into some of the most outlandish and innovative design trends.   Brian’s pillow and bag collection is aptly called his “Tropical at Heart” line, exclusive designs that inspire his love of creativity and all things Florida and Shabby Chic. Having always been of a tropical persuasion it wasn't long before this Jersey Shore native would make his graceful departure to Florida making Jacksonville Florida’s Historic Springfield neighborhood his home.  Brian aspired to live amidst the beauty and culture that is…..Florida.  Palm trees, rivers and beaches and a perfect year round climate, is what makes him get up every day and do what he loves most, designing and working with vintage fabrics.   Brian loves color, he is drawn to wild and bold colorful designs, mixing and matching an array of color schemes that are explosively unexpected, using sometimes as many as 10 different vintage textiles in one pillow, making them completely reversible with a piping often times comprised of a patchwork mish mosh of scraps so as to not waste one single piece! Often times even incorporating the original selvedge writing of the fabric, making a very vintage statement, making each design one of a kind, so don't be surprised to see designs that have "Guaranteed to be Vat Prints".  While Brian’s pillows are made of all recycled vintage materials, they are stuffed with a brand new poly fill insert that is hand picked for its softness and integrity. All fabrics have already been washed so they have already stood the test of time and will be durable.     Brian’s experience with vintage textiles has led him to Hollywood movie sets, where he is reputable for providing vintage fabrics for movies, such as Titanic, After the Storm, Cotton Club, Driving Miss Daisy, Devil in a Blue Dress, LA Confidential, Seabiscuit, Fried Green Tomatoes, The Black Dahlia, Pleasantville, Far from Heaven, Hollywoodland, Borat and more.  He has also worked with designers, Nicole Miller, Vera Wang, JZ Knight of Ramtha fame, and Versace.    A self taught artist and designer, Brian’s experience is as much a mixed bag, as his designs.  His resume includes working as a NYC club designer/decorator, wedding designer and interior decorator.  As a floral designer, Brian did the flowers for Rose Kennedy’s 100th Birthday Party and worked as the exclusive floral designer for Eileen Ford of Ford Modeling fame.  Brian is also owner of “Curb Appeal”, a consulting business both online and in Jacksonville Florida, where he offers advice on how to really add to your home and make it pop.  He does exclusive engagements showcasing his pillow and bag designs, mostly notably on Miami’s Lincoln Road, Palm Beach Art Show, Coconut Grove Art Show and the  Florida Collectible Show where he also gives presentations on the history of vintage textiles.  His designs are carried at 22 retail boutiques worldwide, from Rodeo Drive to Sydney, Australia.   Born in Asbury Park New Jersey in 1966. Brian has lived in NYC, Atlanta, Texas, and the Jersey Shore.  He bought and renovated a Victorian home in Springfield with his partner of 11 years, James.  His home is a known neighborhood icon, popular by its tropical colors of Caribbean blue and yellow and appropriately named “Key West”, which has been on home tours in Historic Springfield.
