My name is Jennifer, I am 29 years old for the seventh time ;o) and began keeping Bettas for myself in June 2005. I fell in love with them after acquiring Elvis, a pet store Betta that I purchased in May of 2005. I am married to my husband of 20 years who works for our local Sheriff's Department as a Deputy Sheriff. We have two sons, Devin-20 and Chaz-12 as well as twin daughters, Taylor & Sydney born November 2006.
I worked with children for 10 years then began attending college part time (Majoring first in Psychology but quickly switched to Business Administration). During college a friend asked me to fill in for her as a Legal Secretary while she went on maternity leave, a position I was completely inexperienced at. That "fill in" position turned permanent and I worked as a Legal Secretary for a Real Estate Law Firm for the next 4 years, then with a Law Group that covered all types of cases (Criminal, Personal Injury, Divorce, Real Estate, etc). The last 6 months of my position as a Legal Secretary began to become extremely difficult. I had no "drive" to get up in the morning and my attention to detail began to suffer. After seeing many doctors and having multiple tests run, I was diagnosed with a Neurological illness called RLS or (Restless Legs Syndrome). It may sound harmless, but it causes a lot of pain and discord in my once structured life. Almost simultaneously I was also diagnosed with Hashimoto's Disease, an auto-immune disease where the immune system attacks and destroys the Thyroid Gland. As a result of this I am on thyroid hormone replacement for my hypothyroidism as well as neurological medications for the RLS. As it became more increasingly difficult to work and perform previously simple tasks, I left my job and have been at home since. I found that after acquiring "Elvis" I became quickly smitten with bettas. They have now become a very intricate part of my life and I get great enjoyment from successfully breeding and raising beautiful fish as well as showing the fish that I raise.
Shortly after acquiring my first betta I became part of several online forums where I formed some very important relationships with fellow betta lovers. One of the most influential people that I met and soon became a mentor to me was Victoria Parnell-Stark ( www.bettysplendens.com ). She has been a tremendous influence as well as a good friend. I hope to soon be able to attend some betta shows in person so that I can meet some of the wonderful people in person that I have come to know online. Some people I have already had the pleasure of meeting in person and I am lucky to have made these acquaintances also. I will continue to breed bettas as it is a relaxing hobby that I enjoy. I would like to give a big "Thank You" to all of the wonderful customers that continue to frequent LuvMyBetta ( www.luvmybetta.com ) and share in my work.
As well as breeding, raising, showing & selling bettas my husband, Glenn has an import license. With this license he sometimes imports wholesale bettas that you will find on my site for sale along with the bettas that I have bred. He gets shipments in from Thailand of transship only fish every 2 weeks that are around 250-300 fish per shipment (Bettas, Guppies, Angels, Flowerhorn, Discus, etc.). This entails ALOT of emails and time. So please be patient when emailing, we try to respond to all emails within 24 hours. Emails that are received over the weekend or Holidays will take longer than 24 hours for a response (we need a break sometimes too). If you have not received a response within 48 hours and it is neither a weekend or holiday, try emailing again as it may not have reached us. If you still have trouble with email, go to my Contact page and try both emails there.
I am also a member of GABBA , the Atlanta Area Aquarium Association , Southern Crescent Parents of Multiples (not a fish organization) and LLLI (not a fish organization).
I would like to thank all of the readers who have sent me kind and helpful emails regarding my RLS & Thyroid issues. I appreciate and am grateful for all of the advice & suggestions. Even if there is something that does not work for me I can always pass the advice along to others that suffer from the same health problems that I have. And then there are the occasional times that the advice does work and that is a blessing in itself. So many thanks to all and God bless :o)
