My name is Charles McKee. I started Bakka:a science fiction bookshoppe in Toronto, Ontario back in 1972 (North America's first sf specialty bookstore). Moved on in
the early 80's to British Columbia, helped raise two kids and when they were well placed in school, began selling books on the Web in 1994.
Created The HouseDaddy BookSellers Association (HoDaBoDa's) soon after, but sadly it fell apart due to the simple fact that all of the housedad booksellers were either
busy changing diapers or selling books.
Now after bookselling on the Web for over 12 years and getting on in age have retired from the book biz ... the kids are grownup, and "empty nesting" is on the horizon with one daughter still learning to fly.
The better half, naturally, has decreed that I should work till I die and "retirement" in the traditional sense of the word is a fiction that many modern oldies never get to realize ... she has squarely placed me in that category.
Which explains why I was working as fundraising & promo rep at British Columbia's first and still only Krispy Kreme Doughnuts in Delta, B.C. till recently ... their doughnuts were a treat I grew up with as a child down "South". And being the only such creature at this Canadian outpost, I have excelled at boring the young staff to tears with tales of what it was like "back when". Ah well, dough is dough, no matter how you do it.

Main hobbies include fishing and collecting flies & lures, drooling over nifty rods & reels, British humour TV sitcoms, reading humour books, and collecting Family Guy's Stewie figures ... and except for the fishing & Stewie bits which most around me consider slightly insane activities ... am a fairly normal chap who has been a damn fine cook for five decades now and can use duct tape on a skill level with Red Green when something around the house breaks or is broken by yours truly.
I am also a Sherlock Holmes and Solar Pons fan ... and always looking
for related items. At present I am looking for Arkham House editions of

My game is always afoot!!
Just started playing on eBay at the end of April 2006 and continuing to learn the ropes ... so please have patience with a old "geezer-in-training". Have already met many fine folks out on the auction playground!!
Though living in beautiful British Columbia, have maintained a US postal box for last 7 years just across the border for all of my USA collecting/buying. My better-half and I go down to Point Roberts, Washington at least three times a week to do her USA customer book parcel mailings and the fine folks at the USPS there just love to poke fun at "what has Charlie gone and bought now??" There is no justice for the collector in this world!! We must bare the jests ... sigh. [ Whoa, is that ever loaded with puns !]
Please do not tell my better-half what I'm up to ... she is a veteran Ebay'er ... known as bookstotheborder ... and will simply kill me if she finds just one more Stewie statue or fly collection in the mail box!!
Besides ... you wouldn't want to lose a good customer, now would you??
What's that Noise ???
[ This little bit of mine came to light in a email to a very friendly fellow when I bought some lures from him recently - thought you'd like it! ]
"Had almost forgotten your email response concerning Cicada's ... it is such a memorable sound, esp. for those who spend any time around them ... you'll never forget it. I sometimes think the background white noise in my aging ears are the Cicada's at work ... but then I also sometimes find myself drifting mentally back to a time we use to run out into the neighbourhood yards and using beat up tennis rackets and baseball bats go to whacking June Bugs in the spring when they seemed to swarm everywhere. Now that was sport ... better than any video game could ever be!!"

PS:
I learned about a practice some sellers have faced with a few buyers doing "charge backs" via PayPal. Guess modern methods of commerce bring their own new problems for everyone.
Please let me assure one and all that when I bid on something and win, that no such nonsense will be visited upon you from this end. I know what I'm bidding on. I pay promptly via PayPal when the auction is over. I trust the item to be delivered as agreed.
And should ever there be a problem (ie: you forgot to pack all of the "won" sharp little fishing flies or lures because one got stuck on your sweater while parceling), I shall communicate and work with the you to resolve the issue (ie: point out that all dirty sweaters should be checked before putting in the washing machine anyway!
...And NEVER wash clothing that has little pieces of crumpled paper with daughter's friend's phone numbers on them, for example!!)
Guess my point is, being a Canadian resident in Beautiful British Columbia with a verified PayPal address (this is known by the fact of my aching bones from all the yard work that continually needs to be done will attest to living in this rain forest region of BC!) should not be held against me by a few of my new USA acquaintances because of a few bad experiences they have had ... just like in the States, we have a few "bad apples" here as well ... but, just like there, most people here are kind, honest, and fine upstanding folks who stand by their auction purchases.
Having been in the book business for over 30 years ... though now retired as mentioned ... in all that time ... I only experienced a handful of ... shall we say, "not-quite-honest" folks. I realize the world of eBay is much bigger than my old world of bookselling ... but lets face it ... people are people everywhere.
Almost everyone I have purchased from so far via eBay auctions have accepted PayPal payment just fine ... there have been only a couple of exceptions ... and, they very nicely explained their previous problems or reasons ... which I appreciate. But please remember, I am trusting you to provide what was won ... and my end of the process will be upheld as well ... no "if's" "and's" or "buts". So, if possible, let me pay via PayPal to make life easier for another member in the growing legions of "boomers" going over the cliff.
