Our history and philosophy -
The owner was forced out of the disco world by his first wife in 1980. Needing to find something to do once the honeymoon was over, he returned to card collecting, which had been a favorite pasttime with grandpa in the mid-50s. The 80s were fun as three manufacturers pumped out brand new, immediately and forever valuable cards and sets which included rookie cards of Rickey, Cal , Jose, Cecil, Roger, Joe, Jerry, Mario and last, but not least, Michael.
Frequent show attendance eventually led to a shift to the other side of the table in the late 1980s as an exhibitor / collector. It's truly amazing what went unsold on dealer tables during this era and yes, we too ignored the $.25 cent gem mint commons from the 50s and 60s as we flipped cases and chased wax boxes at the local convenience store with hope of acquiring Shaq rookies to sell to other dealers. We were MO265 on Sportsnet, the WIRE, if any of you old timers remember us.
By 1991 Ichabods Collectibles had acquired resale licenses in a good number of states and went into travel mode to big shows all across the country as a seller and autograph dealer. When Joe D. came out of "public signing retirement" in the early 90s we flew to Philly and drove on to Atlantic City to meet and have him do a dozen ROAs. We were at Anaheim in 1991 to gather up Sandy signatures when he came out of hibernation. This was our first NSCC, we shared a table with another dealer and can remember hearing the fans were lined up around the building three times awaiting the departure of each collector so the fire department could let the next person into the show. And then there was the occasion when we presented Ted with a dozen balls (he didn't particularly care for dealers) which he "nicely" signed and then rolled each ball across the podium one at a time, wet ink and all.
We watched investors depart and a growth in the number of serious collectors who appreciated the past and wanted to replace memories that had been lost when sports figures were role models. We were lucky enough to convert to vintage only by 1994. Just about the last direct delivery we received from any manufacturer was 1993 Topps Finest Baseball. We sold the packs for $15 each the first week out and refractors for ridiculous prices.
As time went on we accumulated a good listing of vintage collectors, set builders and folks from all across the country who still buy from us today through the mail. We also stock vintage cards and memorabilia items at a number of retail outlets in the greater Kansas City area.
