Know your Irish Postal History, recognition of the Irish Maltese Crosses.
The Mullingar Cross always comes up in conversation when people start talking about Irish Postal History, it started when Postmaster Edward Gordon changed his Maltese Cross stamping device with notches and cuts, so that it would stand out from other Maltese Crosses.

This how it appears in some books but this it is not correct.

The Mullingar Cross was in use with cuts from Sept 1840 until May 1844 (Cover dated the 16 May 1844 was sold by Robson Lowe in 1958). Also there are Mullingar covers known without cuts.
