About Us

It's a Burl started up back in the late seventies. There was just a small workshop and gallery with finished burl items for sale. Eventually people started asking for burl to use for their own woodworking projects so things expanded to include a wood yard with slabs and burl caps for sale. As the business grew a number of other woodworkers began to make furniture, carvings and just about anything you can imagine made from burl. Now days there are about a dozen people here making pieces for our galleries and custom orders.

If you were to visit us now, you would find two galleries of furniture and other burl creations, a big barn full of burl caps, and several hundred burl slabs. Not to mention the unusual creations about the grounds and several individual woodworking shop areas. There are several tree houses on the grounds for visitors to explore. One is set up as a woodworking area used by one of our craftsmen when the weather is nice. People like to watch the crafts people at work to get ideas and see how to make things.

We have become a bit of a tourist destination. Since we are on a road that goes to the redwoods and the coast, a lot of vacationers see our place when driving by and stop to look around. You can't miss us. Most of the buildings look like scenes from the movie "The Hobbit" along with all the outdoor carvings and tree houses. If you are ever near Southern Oregon you will want to be sure to come visit us. Just plan on spending most of the day because there is so much to see.

 About the Wood

We are not just wood suppliers, but woodworkers ourselves. We use this same wood that we are selling here on ebay. This is not the sort of wood you will find in the lumber stores. Each piece is like a one of a kind piece of art. Just about anything you make with this wood is going to look great. It doesn't matter if you are a beginner or a professional. This is some cool stuff.

Most of the wood we have listed here on ebay has had a good bit of prep work already done for you. After the slabs and burl caps are cut we pressure wash them and then give them about a week in the kiln to kill any bugs and start the drying process. Some of the wood will move a bit when it dries so we will remill it to get the slabs ready for sale. After that the wood will usually be pre-sanded for you (normally to 120 grit) using a belt sander or thickness sander, then a hand held random orbital. This way you don't have to spend so much time getting the wood ready to use. You can get started on your project and enjoy working with the wood you purchased. If you have ever tried to work with a rough cut slab that someone cut with a chainsaw, to make it flat and sand out the saw marks, you will be grateful not to have to do it again.

I try to take good closeup photos so you can see exactly what you will be getting. The photos show the wood misted with water so you don't have to guess what the colors and figuring will look like when you finish it. Since you are making your purchase based on photos and a written description instead of being able to see the wood in person, we wanted to take away any risk that it might not be exactly what you had in mind.

 About Our Customers

Most people who buy wood from us once, will come back for more again and again. Our customers range from the beginner to the professional woodworker. Individual luthiers as well as large guitar companies buy our resawing billets and bookmatch sets for their high end custom guitars. Wood turners, carvers and sculptors buy our burl caps. High end jewelry box and humidor makers like our bookmatch sets and a lot of the same woods the guitar makers use. Knife makers, and custom pool cue makers cut up our slabs for handles. Custom furniture makers use slabs for tabletops, desks, chairs benches and a variety of other furniture projects. Traditional furniture and cabinet makers resaw the slabs and billets for panels and inserts. Artists will use slabs to display their work on or caps and slabs for components of their sculptural projects. Some of the slabs with a natural opening are used for mirror and picture frames. We have one customer who comes up from Arizona each year and fills up a truck with slabs that he finishes and sells as wall hangings. A couple fireplace shops make rustic mantels from some of our longer slabs. We even have several jewelers who use burl instead of gemstones in some of their custom jewelry.
