| I always seem to be looking for things that no one ever heard of, no one quite knew what to think of, or no one uses anymore. If it's obscure, odd, or just pain obsolete, chances are I want it.
I've never been much of a shopper or a buyer except when it comes to music. I love records from old cylinders and 78's to brand new LP's. I used a reel-to-reel tape deck up until a few years ago when mine finally bit the dust as far as regular playback was concerned. I still found uses for it in some experimental "music" tracks I made by stretching, melting, scratching, looping, and otherwise manipulating the tape or the player. I miss that old beast something awful. Ipods and earbuds just don't sound alive to me like the old analog devices with test tube amps and 50 ton speakers. People who have never heard a virgin vinyl record played on good equipment will never realize just how awful modern recordings sound.

| Thrift stores have always been a treasure chest for me. I've found records and tapes at thrift shops that are downright horrible and unlistenable (I have a particular love for these), bizarre (in both creative and creepy ways), independent, obscure, and just plain groovy. Old "home-recorded" records were always a special treat. Cassettes and open reel tapes were often gems as well.
One example that I had for years (and wish I hadn't lost) was a paper 7" 78RPM record laminated with a thin layer of plastic for the grooves. It looked like it had been folded a few times, left in the bottom of boxes with junk stacked on it, stepped on, and thrown out. Chunks of the plastic had come off. The center hole was worn to twice the normal size. It was nearly impossible to imagine that you could still manage to get it pretty close to centred on the platten, plop a needle down on it and faintly hear someone singing "The Woodpecker Song." At the end of that a child started to recite "Little Boy Blue," but the record ended before it was finished. I have no idea where it came from, it goes back with me into my earliest memories as though I was born with it. These are the kinds of things I shop for. Where else besides thrift stores could I ever hope to find them? Why, ebay of course! |
