How big or small is a Millimeter?
Many of us growing up in the United States never learned the metric system.
However the rest of the world is on the metric system and certain products are always listed and sold internationally by metric size.
Gemstones are one of those items and are always listed by millimeter size first and then by carat weight. This is because each gem has a different weight.
A 1 carat Diamond is a totally different size then a 1 carat Emerald because one weighs more then the other.
You must know a gems size in order to set it, not the weight.
So for those you have no idea how small a millimeter is here are some tips that will help.
Inches to Millimeters
1 inch is 25.41 mm
1/4 inch is 6.36mm
Now take out some change.
A penny is 19mm across and 1.5mm thick.
A nickel is a little over 21mm across and 2mm thick
A Dime is about 17.81mm across and only 1.30mm thick.
A Quarter is a little over 24mm across and 1.70mm thick
Hopefully this has helped you understand millimeter sizes a little better.
3mm Amethyst
Same 3mm Amethyst next to a dime.
