How we got the idea.

     My father came up with the idea quite a few years ago.  He struggled with the process of removing the back of the bottle.  He finally let me in on the idea a few years later. 

     I  tossed around a few ideas on how to accomplish safely removing the back of the bottle. I thought of a tourch, glass cutter, a wide variety of saws.  But none worked well enough to use and be somewhat cost efective.  When I settled on a saw that I thought would do the job it failed.  Back to the drawing board again.   A few different saws later I finally found the right one to use.  (I'm not telling which one though)

     After I completed the first night light, Corona Light, I couldn't believe how neat it looked.  I was so impressed that I had to take pictures and send them to my dad.  He suggested I try to sell a few. 

    I started making a few from my own empty bottles i got each weekend.  Soon I had a lot of volunteers to help me get the raw materials.  (Empty bottles)  As a finishing touch I decided to start putting the matching caps on the bottles.  I thought that was just be perfect to top off the night light.  Then came the fun of finding the caps that nobody ever keeps.  I had to convince everyone to gently open the beers save the caps for me.

Where to sell them?

     Then I thought that eBay was the place to reach the most and diverse customer base I could.  The cost of listing on eBay was lower than trying to build my own store and do the promoting myself. 

      After doing extensive research on what price night lights were selling at on eBay I started listing some.  The more and more brands that were being requested required more and more labor and materials.

     This is when I got serious I found out how much time it took me to complete one light, about an hour and a half.  What exactly the wear and tear on the equipment was, etc...  I had to raise the price of the night lights as I found out how much it was costing me. 

     My neighbor suggested that I go to a craft show and try my hand at face to face sales.  I did well at my first show making more sales than I did on eBay.  By doing face to face sales there is more of a need to present a professional look.  Hence more promotional items, business cards, signs, booth fees, etc...  Basically more expences.  The enjoyment of making and selling my night lights out weighs the bumps that we overcame to get where we are now. 

     More importantly where we are going next.  We hope to do more craft shows this year.  also we plan to ramp up production for some really large shows at the end of next year.
