I will NEVER knowingly sell you a doll in the WRONG CLOTHING -- by size, or state they belong to this year issue doll when I KNOW they do not, as, unfortunately, is becoming more common for SOME SELLERS who currently do.
I will not state for any reason that an item is RARE that is not, like dresses or cases especially for Tiny Tears ... again, some sellers base their information on guesses rather than research, or simply for the attention the listing might receive as a result of their making such a claim -- For several years now my auctions have provided good, ACCURATE information for anyone to learn from; I have dedicated myself to finding authentic dolls, their clothing and accessories and restoring them accurately and authentically; as such, my book will be published at sometime in the future. There is NO EXCUSE for selling REPRODUCTION items, COMMONLY KNOWN (to those who regularly sell Tiny and Betsy) either to be recently made or made for ANOTHER DOLL, even another BRAND DOLL, and claimed as original.
I will NOT offer you a REPLACEMENT body that is not 100% appropriate, factory issue for the doll being presented, UNLESS I SPECIFICALLY STATE IT IS SO. You have my SATISFACTION GUARANTEE... sorry, but the number of sellers in the antique auction world who are selling you KNOWN FABRICATED dolls without PROPER REPRESENTATION is growing and you should be aware of it.
Who am I?
I have been buying and selling on Ebay in earnest for NINE years -- and believe me it is in earnest! I have collected over 5000 dolls in that time -- SPECIALIZING in baby dolls from the 1930s through the early 1960s. I had a Tiny Tears and a Betsy Wetsy when I was young in the 1950s and started on Ebay just trying to find a replacement arm for my Betsy (she had a nice game of hide-and-seek with our poodle and when found he had a rewarding chew!). From there I purchased my first Mint in Box Betsy Wetsy and still needed an arm... so I kept looking... and buying. I have expanded my resources to find my dolls and have met many fine people during my travels. My dolly friends and customers are much appreciated!
Given my experience on Ebay I want to address the FEEDBACK system we all depend upon to feel comfortable making informed purchases. MOST of the sellers I have worked with have been truly wonderful, but there are many purchases that fall a mile short of description, and the pictures did NOT tell the whole story. I found that asking about concerns I have about a doll really helps both the seller and me! Many sellers don't really know about a doll they have up for sale because it is not their specialty, and they need your questions to make things go more smoothly. For those of you new to buying on Ebay I can only encourage you to ask specific questions of sellers and if you don't get the answer you need, don't buy, unless you are willing to accept the risk. I have even received truly 'trashed' dolls from sellers who in their description state they want their customer not to be disappointed and go on to name a couple of the flaws in a doll and then leave out the more obvious cloudy eyes that don't show up in their picture, or hair plugs missing, or 'bruises' on the dolls body under the clothing; or, in one case, a doll with 95% blotched vinyl that came in yellow, white and green shades under her clothes -- I paid almost $200 for that one! How about a seller who says, "you can see the hair looks good," (caracul) and then dolly arrives you see that under the bonnet or in the back a spot the size of a half-dollar is completely missing where there should be hair. The list goes on and on...
When I receive a misrepresented doll it has compelled me to want to leave negative feedback, and at times I have been driven over the brink and have had to do so...
I am a very fussy Virgo and won't send out my dolls until I have the right packing materials and every detail is attended to. I am easy to get along with and want HAPPY CUSTOMERS. If you need to get your doll absolutely right away, please just let me know and it will be done. I am a firm believer that one should gain joy from life and avoid grief.
My return policy in general is to refund if I have made a gross error in representation or description... in which case I'd be offering the refund and shipping both ways; however, this does not leave room for buyers who purchase to see the doll and then perhaps change their mind and want a refund because they see something else they want in the interim, or they have unforeseen money obligations and ask for a refund, or we have a MINOR difference of opinion about the condition of a doll. Believe me, I am a nitpicker about dolls myself and I have HAPPILY accommodated my buyers to ensure their happiness. I have been lucky enough to learn to clean my dolls and their clothing and make minor repairs when in order to SAVE a doll and restore her to her original and intended condition. It costs me a lot of time and resources to do this and I do make a profit on my dolls to reflect that effort and to reflect a relative market value.
If I have legitimately made an error in my listing or missed something about the doll (example to follow), I will do my best to make it right. I am always willing to work with you if I have overlooked something obvious -- and I do mean obvious. An example -- a customer purchased a 'fixer upper' composition doll from me -- by the time her mailed check reached me and her doll was shipped almost a month had passed. When she received the doll it had a hole in the compo on the foot that I overlooked -- don't know how that happened, but I do remember seeing the hole as I was packing her and not thinking much about it as I had 6 other dolls just exactly like her I had recently sold. In order to satisfy her disappointment I sent her another, identical doll from my personal collection. That is how far I will go if I am wrong and can help in any way. I did offer her a full refund and shipping both ways, but she did not want a refund and I understood that well as I have felt the same way many times -- a refund is not always the solution to a sale with concerns -- money is not always the answer. I have often purchased a doll for an accessory or clothing that she has included in the auction, only to receive it and find the doll is missing hair plugs or has obvious scrapes and scratches where the description specifically states there were none. Of course, I don't want to return the doll because I want the accessories that are so hard to find -- so here I am with a less than described doll by a mile and won't be happy with a refund. A seller who offers a refund less shipping charges both ways and other fees discourages me from making a return because it is not worth it. Often sellers will offer a return of that nature to protect themselves from a difference in opinion about the condition of a doll and that is good business. Others may use it as a 'blanket disclaimer' to cover their unethical sales and deliberate deception and that is very disappointing.
Your doll and her clothing will be CLEAN and FRESH, pressed and ready for display. I endeavor to be accurate in my descriptions and provide GREAT photographs with a fine camera and high pixel count to help you see what you are purchasing. A camera will not pick up everything and a description will help supplement what you can't see. See below for general information about my most popular dolls.
The vinyl body might have scratches on it -- ALL vinyl Betsy Wetsy dolls have these scratches as it is natural part of the vinyl molding process. I have many mint in box Betsy dolls and do know the difference between a real flaw and incidentals. If there are any missing fingers or toes or nips at the end of them I will say so. I make a distinction between a MINT doll and her clothing -- oftentimes one or the other will have a slight flaw. These dolls are in pristine condition and a RARE find on Ebay. I GUARANTEE the eyes on my Betsy are good. I DO have some that are not perfect in that they will be slightly sunken, but I will say so if that is the case in my description. And, they will have all their eyelashes unless stated differently. The biggest problem with a 1950s Betsy is the eyes and one of the reasons my dolls are popular in that you won't have that problem. In general, my Betsy dolls are in excellent condition and most certainly better than ANY I have received myself from anywhere, so I stand behind my dolls as excellent and will not refund over petty differences of a pindot I might have missed or some other minor perceived flaw -- it is not tolerated. I go to great lengths to ensure my dolls are just WONDERFUL and a pleasure to receive. Having bought so many myself I know what it is to receive a doll that arrives nicely packaged, is clean and is close to the vision I had when I bought her.
I've collected, researched and sold Tiny Tears dolls now for TEN years everyday. She is my speciality along with Betsy and Dy-Dee and my research has now led to future publication of a book about these wonderful dolls. I am currently selling all my dolls (of which there are many) and those that I just don't have room to display properly -- and there are over 1000 that fall into that category. Slowly, I am selling many of them now; I clean the doll and her accessories and perhaps add something to her layette that belongs>/ to her and has been separated for many years. I have purchased a dozen 19-20" rubber bodied Tiny Tears to find the very best body. I chose to keep a few and the rest are absolutely GREAT, better than most people would imagine possible. I have 100s of dresses and accessories for all sizes and types of Tiny Tears dolls from the 50s decade. I chose to keep many, but heck, I think I spend more on doll clothes than myself and I can't keep everything!
With regard to Tiny's rubber body -- it is very difficult to photograph the real condition of her body, and I will try to be as descriptive as I can so you will know what you are bidding on. After having so many Tiny Tears I think I can accurately describe them on a relative scale -- body condition is the source of most surprise when receiving a doll -- sometimes the surprise is good and sometimes a disappointment. Your best bet is to know that 99.9% of my dolls are received in better condition than buyer imagined and that will have to be my credential.
I take EXCELLENT photos to show condition of compo and describe well. If there is something of importance to you concerning this type of doll, PLEASE email me about it. I answer quickly and am very friendly! I have never had a problem with a customer and the condition of a doll received, but there is a first time for everything. I have chosen to sell most of my compo collection in the past as it seems they do not fare well in my climate. However, I did meet a couple of very fine compo restorationists recently and consider keeping/acquiring some favorites now.
