My name is.....
.....Kenyata Sullivan, and I live here in Wilmington, NC (home of Michael Jordan, where they film One Tree Hill, and smack dab in Hurricane Alley- I live in this great Cape Fear, and would have it no other way). I first discovered eBay by chance in 1997, and it's turned out to be (honestly) a life changing experience. When I found out about the site, things were changing drastically in my life. I had been a musician in an "underground" rock band for years- made a few Cds, toured, even got on MTV, all that fun stuff. But in 1997, my Grandmother got sick, and I quit playing music full time in order to take care of her. I was faced with no way to earn a living (the rest of my family was exceptionally worried- "sure, he can play music, but what can he "do"?!) EBay gave me something I could do! Now I go to yard sales, storage auctions, etc, and auction off the wonderful things I find there. This way, I can stay here with my Grandmother, and take care of her, and still earn a living. And I get to keep a lot of neat stuff on top of that, what a deal!
And so here I am!
As I write this, it's been about six and a half years since I first found eBay, and I'm a full time eBayer! My Grandmother is doing great, we're getting the house fixed up, and on top of that, I'm able to co-organize an annual independent arts festival I founded in 1996 (W.E.Festival) featuring writers and musicians from around the world. And to top it all off, I was also lucky enough to be one of the featured sellers in the first Associated Press article on eBay waaay back when, bought stock on the opening day, and was one of the original 7 chosen eBayers who were first used as examples of eBay community members in the "About eBay" section of the site. I'm very proud of my relationships with my buyers, and I'm proud that they value me as a part of this fantastic online community. I am forever grateful for the opportunities all of you have given me by just being a part of all of this. And my music is getting back on track as well- I've recently released a CD of my new band (MAJESTIC TWELVE "Searching For The Elvis Knob"), mixed by the legendary engineer Jerry Kee (Superchunk, Sorry About Dresden, Connells, Portostatic, etc), and mastered by the brilliant Chris Stamey (dB's, REM, Ryan Adams, Matthew Sweet, etc), and we're already sold out of the first four pressings! If you'd like a copy or a burn, feel free to drop me a line, I'm always up for a trade (especially with other musicians and folks who do zines, indie films, mail art, or other grassroots arts projects). We're recording the next one now.... wish me luck, I hope it doesn't suck! Live well, take care, and never forget to *absolutely* be in love. It's a good thing.
