I make many different items out of natural materials, giving them a Native twist. I use willow branches for the "hoops" of my dream catchers, and only use semi-precious stones, bone, horn, seed, metal and glass beads in my creations.... no plastics. All of the feathers used in my designs are top quality feathers.. just as they came from the bird... no dyes. Most of my feathers come from friends and family that raise birds. The leather that I use, I cut by hand from deer and elk hides I have here at the house. The ONLY artificial material in ANY of my items is the sinew that I use for the webbing of my dream catchers, and for stringing my chokers. Real sinew is extremely brittle and hard to work with.. but the artificial sinew does look like the real thing. (I DON'T use the waxed cotton thread that you see on common dream catchers today).  I am proud to make my dream catchers in the old style. It makes each and every dream catcher unique. And since I work with Weeping Willow branches that are very supple and flexible.. it's always interesting to see how weaving the webbing will reshape the "hoop". Sometimes the hoops will twist from the tension of the webbing... and most of the time, the hoops have an oval or tear-drop shape to them, because one end of the branch is thicker than the other when I wrap them.  I also make pine needle baskets. It's amazing what you can make with just some pine needles and raffia. I LOVE crafting with natural materials, and my mother-in-law turned me on to these little gems. They take a while to make, because you have to coil the needles and secure them with each stitch.... but oh are they wonderful when completed!  Again, using natural materials... I also make Native-style chokers, bracelets, anklets and key chains. I use bone, horn, shell, silver, teeth and semi-precious stones... along with my hand-cut leather. The natural materials just feel so good in my hands when I craft, and give the finished piece that much more character and "Life".    
   
  
And now..... the latest addition to my crafting, and my new passion... GOURDS!!!!!! I started working with gourds in 2005, and I absolutely LOVE them!! From the cleaning process all the way to the finished piece. They fit right in with the natural way that I craft, and are so versatile! I don't use glue to attach anything to my gourds (at least I haven't yet... I might if I start doing inlays).. so it's fun to see how I can drill holes and use leather and raffia to decorate my pieces. I haven't painted any of my gourds... again, along the natural line... I've burned the images into the piece and used natural stains and dyes to seal the piece to give it a nice warm glow. I've used natural oil pencils to color one of my pieces.. they're just SO MUCH FUN to experiment with!!          I've even made ornaments from gourds...   ...and have made burden baskets, using the tops of gourds I've crafted with, and even some smaller gourds... combining them with my dream catchers.
