After a full career in advertising and corporate design, while my wife's collegiate teaching career was in full swing, we found ourselves with an unusual idea...

It's easier than ever to get into Kiva...

Kiva Trading Company was born with an idea in 1985, that maybe the Eastern half of the country -- specifically, New York City -- would enjoy seeing the full range of Southwestern Native American handmade crafts and fine art. It seemed like a good idea, anyway... we'd grown up with American Indian arts in our childhood homes, and we had eyes for detail.

Our family started doing arts shows in Manhattan, and for four years, discovered a lot of new friends and customers while building our inventory and reputation for absolute honesty in dealings and authenticity in our merchandise. We soon found our frequent trips West would be better served if we had a base of operations in a central location, and our show income helped us purchase an adobe home in Central Northern New Mexico, not far from Albuquerque. This gave us even better access to the artists and their arts. As the collection grew, so did our business and our need for more room. We expanded our digs and our business.

Just about the time we began feeling we were getting too old for the show grind, we opened a retail gallery in Cold Spring Harbor, a quaint 19th century, L.I. whaling port. It was a big hit, and for the past 18 years, we've done business successfully from that location.

We began kivatrading.com online in 1997, and it steadily grew to be a favorite site for students and others looking for information about the Southwestern American Indian nations, their arts, and traditions in visual symbols. Finally in 2007 we got serious about creating a storefront online with the idea of eventually retiring from our Main Street business. Ebay has been the perfect partner!

Through our website and Ebay store, we'll be able to continue to bring the best values in wonderful examples of Native American Indian handmade arts to a much wider market -- plus, without the heavy overhead of a bricks and mortar gallery, the items we offer in our Ebay store will be priced much lower than on Main Street! This will be good news for our existing customers as well as our new ones. So, it turns out, our history is far from nearing its end -- in fact, we're excited about being able to build up our business again, so visit us often and watch as we continue to grow.

We'll also still offer our customers the same services we always have:

  • Appraisals on estate and collected items
  • Repairs on American Indian handmade jewelry, pottery and Kachina Dolls
  • Remodeling items to increase wearing pleasure
  • Special collectors' services to locate specific items
