At the inception of our eBay business in Summer, 2007, our goal was a part-time, secondary income with stay-at-home flexibility. Though initially successful, the process of listing eventually became more time-consuming than flexible, more expensive than profitable. Ultimately, it was necessary to seek income streams elsewhere & we reluctantly closed our doors in Spring, 2008.
Then in July, 2008, our 25-year old daughter, Chelsea, was taken by ambulance to Baylor Hospital in Dallas, where she was in complete multi-organ failure & given only a 5% chance of survival. By God's grace, she did recover... but only after 7 surgeries in 10 days, including amputation of her left leg above the knee. After 12 comatose days on ventilator life support & hemodialysis, she was awakened--and almost unbelievably--free from significant brain damage. Two weeks from being admitted to ICU, she was moved with great celebration to the hospital step-down floor, where she remained an additional 2 weeks. From there she was accepted into Inpatient Rehab at Baylor, and spent an additional 3 weeks. Finally, after 7 long & painful weeks, she was released home.
Chelsea continues to need daily assistance. In addition to her above-knee amputation, she lost sensation/use of her left hand & wrist, making many personal and/or everyday tasks difficult, often impossible. She suffered significant nerve damage, as well, which has been nearly debilitating in and of itself, but is, to our relief, beginning to show some small signs of improvement. However, without Chelsea's income, we were unable to maintain bills on the 3-bdrm/2-bath rental she shared with her two young toddlers, Destiny & Kaiden. Upon release from inpatient rehab, they moved home with us! We're so incredibly grateful for our daughter's life & the opportunity we have to rebuild a future with her... but also somewhat financially overwhelmed, too. Due to her uninsured status, we're unable to afford medical treatment (tendon repair) that could possibly restore partial function to her hand, probably in the neighborhood of $30-40k; her prosthetic leg is estimated at $34k. Even if she'd been approved for SSI/Disability (she wasn't, though it's currrently on appeal), Texas Medicaid won't cover the ANY cost for prosthetic devices. After 4 long months, she has finally become elibible for Vocational Rehab, and placed on a waiting list for both prosethetic assistance & eventual vocational re-training; however, the wait is for a leg is an estimated 8-88 months, with training provided only once she's able to drive & maneuver a campus independently. She, her family--and especially her 2- & 3-year old children--are anxious for her walk & dance & be independent again... without aid of platform walker or wheelchair!
So Kurious Kollectibles reopens in December 2008. Same ownership, same ethical sales & return policies... completely renewed purpose & vigor! All proceeds generated by our online sales are dedicated toward funding assistance for her prosthetic leg & tendon repair surgery.
We hope you'll take time to browse our store, and come back often; not only for our benefit--though that will certainly be an end-result, and we are grateful--but also for yours in the great values we're offering to raise funds QUICKLY! We look forward to getting to know you, and are committed to providing accurate descriptions of quality products along with exemplary customer service & 100% satisfaction or your money back!
