  • The etymology or origins or the meaning of the words kuyajoey

Kuya means big brother in Filipino(or Tagalog one of the many Philippine languages)It is a term in the Filipino language that denotes respect to a male sibling. It is used much like we use Uncle except it refers to a brother. Joey is a family version of my real name. For the longest time I detested it because I took myself too seriously and felt it hinted at our colonial past. Most of the people in the philippines have dimunitive nicknames that are inappropriate in a business setting. Some other common Filipino nicknames are boy, bimbo, bo, Jun Jun, etc. I grew up in the Midwest joey was not a serious name. I have attained peace with my nickname as I have also evolved into being proud of my Filipino background. Now we proudly trade under Kuya Joey which denotes our Filipino origins. We are trying build a brand that will have a positive impact and chose a company name that calls attention to our origins.
