Colored grommet tape
People have been asking me where I get the colored grommet tape. Well, I dye it. I couldn't find any colored tape and I love color so I do it myself. I treat dyes like paint. I bought a few true colors meaning pure unmixed dyes: red, turquoise, yellow and from those I mix them to make other colors. Some of the colors are pure accident and I probably won't be able to duplicate that exact color again.
 Ocean blue is like that. I was trying to make purple. So I took a turquoise grommet tape I had just dyed and threw it into the pot where I had just dyed 10 yards of dark fuschia pink grommet tape and some lace. I didn't realize that those materials had absorbed more of the red than I thought and the dye was now pink. The pink reacted by deepening the turquoise into an unexpected ocean blue rather than making purple. It is such fun to experiment just to see what color comes up. There are so many factors that it's hard for me to predict colors: how much dye I put, how much material, what kinds of material and how much time between taking out one set of fabric and putting in the next set. So when people ask me if I can get more of a color I once had up for auction and I say I don't know if I can get that color -- I mean it literally, I don't know if I can get that exact color again. Bright turquoise and cherry red, yes, I can probably do it again. But anything else-- ??? Part of the fun is being surprised by the colors that results. I never realized that there are so many hues of reds, pinks and blues.
 I don't use Ritz or the dyes you'll find at craft stores. I researched and found that the dyes that manufacturers use to make fabric were available at a few venues. This dye binds to the fabric rather than floats on top. I tried it, following the instructions, except that I use two fixers instead of one to fix the color. Then I wash it in white bags with my colored clothes in cold water (I always wash color in cold) and check to make sure that there isn't any bleeding before I throw it in the dryer, and finally iron them. If it does bleed, then I put them through the fixing process again. Since I share an apartment, I do small lots of 5-10 yards at a time--the times I can take over the kitchen or bathroom is limited by the fact that I share it although my roommates are pretty cool.
I'll add different bits later -- why grommet tape, about my reconstructed clothes (which I love --I have this whole fantasy thing going so I don't fit into one category--which is difficult on ebay but i like cosplay, goth, punk, cyber, lbg, fantasy, scifi, costumes -- it's all fantasy to me so I like to mix it up, overlapping genres, fabrics, colors. I also am into goddesses so i try to dedicate each piece at least to one goddess or legend. it's better if you're more one thing but i'm of mixed blood so i like mixing it up.), why ebay, artshows i'm going to be in.
