Ken Haney

Military Author & Historian

Consultant on U.S. Marine Corps History

for Writers, the Film Industry & Other Researchers

Consulting Service

I operate a Consulting Service for research on the history of the US Marine Corps, with my specialty being the Marine Paratroopers and Raiders of World War II. I have assisted authors, script-writers in the film industry, students, re-enactors, collectors and other researchers. I've been doing extensive research for 30 years, and I've accumulated a lot of material, much of it is not available through the internet or other sources.

These are the services which I provide: (1) Historical Research - I have a personal library of USMC books and magazines, and collections of films, letters and tape recordings from veterans, photographs, copies of official documents, named medals, ribbons, insignia, uniforms and equipment, (2) Assist the film industry with research for writers and script consultation - I do this work in my residence by email and telephone, so if you need actual military technical advisors to work on set and on location, I suggest "Warriors Inc." (Captain Dale Dye, USMC, Retired) and "1 Force Inc." (Sergeant-Major James "Jim" Dever, USMC Retired), (3) I have contacts with veterans groups, individual veterans, government agencies, authors, collectors and re-enactors, (4) Sell my own books - I wrote and privately published seven books about the Marine Corps and one each on the Coast Guard and police, (5) Sell reprints of more than 500 military photos - many are rare and unpublished, which I obtained from individuals, the National Archives, Naval Historical Center, etc., (6) Sell copies of military documents, replica insignia, reprints of parachute manuals and Johnson Light Machine Gun manuals.

I've had the privilege of meeting a number of notable American military figures, such as General Louis H. Wilson, the 26th Commandant of the Marine Corps, who earned the Medal of Honor on Guam; General Michael W. Hagee, 33rd Commandant, who received the Bronze Star with Combat "V" for Vietnam; former Marine Jack Lucas, the youngest member of any of the naval services to earn the Medal of Honor, which was at Iwo Jima, and author of the excellent autobiography "Indestructible"; Colonel Dave Severance, USMC (Retired), a Marine Paratrooper and Silver Star-recipient for Iwo Jima, who commanded the company which raised both flags there; Colonel Buzz Aldrin, US Air Force (Ret.), astronaut and second man on the moon; Lieutenant-Colonel Brian J. Quirk, USMC (Ret.), Makin Island Raider who also earned a Navy Cross on Bougainville; Master Sergeant Walter F. "Fritz" Gemeinhardt, USMC (Ret.), renown aviation artist and Marine Paratrooper; William "Dave" Davenport, author and Marine Paratrooper who received a Purple Heart for Iwo Jima; plus I met and/or corresponded with numerous other combat veterans such as Medal of Honor-recipients and General James Roosevelt, who was a Marine Raider and Navy Cross-recipient, and son of the President.

I also met and/or corresponded with some famous lawmen including author and former LAPD Sergeant Joseph Wambaugh; Sergeant Nick McDonald of the Dallas PD (Ret.), who arrested assassin Lee Harvey Oswald and earned the Police Medal of Honor; author and retired NYPD Detective Bo Dietl; retired Texas Ranger and author Glenn Elliott; Detective Sergeant Anthony Gledhill of London's Metropolitan Police (Ret.), recipient of the George Cross; author and retired Knox County Tennessee Sergeant David Hunter; and several others.

Assisted Instructors & Authors

I assisted an instructor/author at the US Naval Academy and eight other writers, and was mentioned in the Acknowledgements and/or Biblography sections of their books: (1) Lieutenant (later lieutenant-commander, retired) Thomas W. Strother, US Navy, used material from one of my books in 1992 to enhance a course which he taught on Navy and Marine Corps history, at the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, (2) Jim Moran - "US Marine Corps Uniforms & Equipment in WW2" 1992, (3) Peter R. Senich - "US Marine Corps Scout-Sniper: WWII & Korea" 1993, (4) Colonel Jon T. Hoffman, USMCR - "Silk Chutes & Hard Fighting: US Marine Corps Parachute Units in World War II" 1999, (5) LtCol Simon Webb, USMCR (Ret.) - "One Man's War" 2000, (6) Bruce Canfield - "Johnson Rifles and Machine Guns" 2002, (7) Eddie Ashmore - "Tennessee Lawman: A History of the Men and Women Behind the Badge" 2006, (8) James F. Christ - "Battalion of the Damned: the 1st Marine Paratroopers at Gavutu and Bloody Ridge, 1942" 2007, and (9) retired Deputy John Burden wrote a story about an officer-involved shooting that I was in, titled "It Happened So Fast" for the February 2007 issue of "All Points Bulletin," the official publication of the Riverside Sheriff's Association in California.

Film Projects

I did consulting work (provided information, books, photos, unit patches, etc.) on six film projects: (1) "Heroes of Iwo Jima" - documentary, A&E Network, 2001, (2) "Marine Raiders" - documentary, The History Channel, 2001, (3) "Windtalkers" - feature film, 2002, (4) "Paramarines" segment on "Mail Call" - documentary, The History Channel, 2005, (5) "In the Line of Duty: the Lives of Heroes," police documentary, Union University & EPlusTV Cable Channel 6 in Jackson, Tennessee (in which I also had an on-screen interview), 2006, and (6) assisted author Hugh Ambrose with research for a project which evolved into an HBO miniseries about World War II, titled "The Pacific," which will air in 2009.

Military Art

Master Sergeant W. F. "Fritz" Gemeinhardt, USMC (Ret.) used his skills as an aviation artist to draw art for the issues of "The Opening Shock," newsletter of the former Association of Survivors/USMC WWII Parachute Units. After reading one of my books, he created a military art print based on the story of that battle, titled "We Will Hold the Line," which was used for the July 1994 and January 1995 covers of that newsletter; he also gave permission for me to include it in later editions of that book. The organization called The Company of Miltary Historians in Rutland, Massachusetts released an art print in 1995 by former Marine Loy Conley in its Miltary Uniforms in America series, titled "Marine Paratroopers, 1940-1945." One of my books was credited in the descriptive text which accompanied that print.

Marine Corps & Law Enforcement Experience

Although I was born in 1955, ten years after WWII ended, I've been interested in WWII history since my youth; it began with my parents telling me stories about that war. As I grew up in the 1960's I read military comics and watched 1940's movies on television, then as I got older, I read WWII books and was particularly impressed by the role of the US Marine Corps in the Pacific campaign.

My family has a history of service during most of America's major wars - the French & Indian War, the American War for Independence, War of 1812, Civil War/War for Southern Independence, WWII, Korea, Vietnam and now the War on Terrorism. There is also a tradition of Marine Corps service in my family. I joined the Corps in 1975 and served as a corporal in the Corrections branch of the Military Police, earning a Good Conduct Medal and Rifle Expert Badge. In addition to my four years of active duty, my wife was a Woman Marine, a cousin went through boot camp with me at Parris Island, another cousin was in the 6th Marine Division and was Wounded in Action on Okinawa, and a brother-in-law was a Marine.

I became a police officer in 1980 and I've been involved in incidents of "urban combat" that American police officers have to endure - assaults, injuries, high-speed pursuits and shootings. I was awarded TWO MEDALS OF VALOR and the LIFE SAVING MEDAL by the Jackson Police Department, the SILVER STAR FOR BRAVERY by the American Police Hall of Fame, plus nineteen JPD Commendation Letters, Officer of the Month Award for November 1988, Employee of the Month Award for August 2004 and JPD/Kiwanis Club Officer of the Year Award for 2005. I earned an Associate of Science Degree in Politicial Science/Criminal Justice, with a minor in history. I'm a uniformed officer in the Patrol Division, I've worked as a Field Training Officer, member of the Rifle Response Team, as an instructor for Recruit Schools and In-Service Training, and in plain clothes for Armed Robbery and Burglary Details. I've also attended numerous specialized schools such as Anti-Terrorism, Gangs and Dignitary Protection, including several courses in the Regional Counterdrug Training Academy, at the Meridian Naval Air Station in Mississippi.

Writing Experience

In my youth, I wrote short stories as a hobby. Then I had military and law enforcement magazine articles published in: (1) "Combat Handguns," (2) "The Law Enforcement Review," (3) "Leatherneck," (4) "Military," (5) "The Opening Shock" (newsletter of the Assn of Survivors/WWII Marine & Navy Paratroopers), and (6) "The Raider Patch" (newsletter of the US Marine Raiders Assn).

Because of my interests in writing and in Marine Corps history, I began doing research in 1983 and wrote books about USMC units. I also later wrote a book about the Coast Guard-manned patrol frigates of WWII, which was the class of ship which my father served aboard. I contacted more than 600 veterans and 150 agencies and groups, toured museums and bases, and attended two Marine Paratrooper reunions and three Coast Guard Patrol Frigate reunions.

In 1994, during the 50th Anniversary of WWII, I got the surviving crew of my father's ship (USS NEW BEDFORD PF-71) recognized as an official WWII Commemorative Community, and I was the historian for that group. I received two awards for my work, Certificates of Appreciation from two veterans groups. I'm a member of the Marine Corps Association and the Fraternal Order of Police, and an associate member of the 5th Marine Division Association.

I wrote and privately published eight military books and one law enforcement book, which I sell on ebay. They cover the Marine Paratroopers, Raiders, and Marines in the OSS (Office of Strategic Services), JASCO (Joint Assault Signal Companies), ANGLICO (Air-Naval Gunfire Liaison Companies), one is about the Coast Guard-manned Patrol Frigates of World War II, and one is about the Medals and Shoulder Patches of the Jackson, Tennessee Police Department.

Donations

I donated USMC material to the Marine Corps Research Center at Quantico, Virginia; the "Ken Haney Personal Papers Collection" includes some of my books, copies of documents and a biography. Also, I donated items for a display at Ira H. Hayes High School in Bapchule, Arizona in honor of that WWII Marine Paratrooper and Iwo Jima veteran. I assisted an officer in the pre-commissioning crew of the WASP-class amphibious assault ship USS MAKIN ISLAND (LHD-8) in obtaining photos and documents for display aboard that warship. Then on August 19, 2006 my wife, grandson and I had the unique experience of attending the vessel's christening in Pascagoula, Mississippi as guests of the US Navy and Northrop-Grumman Ship Systems. We had the pleasure of speaking with several veterans of the 2nd Raider Battalion there. I've also made monetary and/or material donations to the US Marine Raider Association; the Association of Survivors/USMC WWII Parachute Units; the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, Virginia; the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, VA; the Wounded Warrior Project and the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.
