LEATHER CRAFT AND HARDWARE INFORMATION:
ALL HARDWARE IS PACKAGED BY WEIGHT, EXACT AMOUNTS MAY VARY
ALL HARDWARE IS SOLD IN COMPLETE SETS, A 100 pack of snaps contains 100 caps, 100 sockets,, 100 studs, 100 posts, 400 pieces in total
LEATHER is sold by the weight per square foot. 1oz-4oz is used for light weight clothing, 3oz-6oz is used for accessories and medium weight clothing, 5oz-9oz is used for heavy items such as belts and protective clothing, 8oz-14oz is used for linemen's belts and esquestrian items. Every hide is tanned differently , sun-fading, sun-tanning, bleeding, stretching can vary. Heavy leathers may require time and use to "break in" although neetsfoot can be applied to speed this process. It is recommended to keep leather clean, dry and oiled. Lexol or simular cleaners, and conditioners are widely available at sporting good or leather stores.
TOOLS: Heavier materials such as leather require pre-punching holes before setting the hardward, always use a rubber or simular pad to protect your tools when punching holes on a solid surface. To set hardware it is best to use a sturdy, hard surface such as marble or steel which prevents bouncing when the setter tool is struck with a wood or rawhide mallot, metal hammers are not recommended as they will damage the setter.
BASE METALS: It is best to assume hardware items are plated steel, especially during the current expensive metals market environment. Brass is usually much more expensive than steel since copper is used to make brass. Use a magnite to determine if the base metal is steel. Plating materials are usually nickle, brass, black oxide, silver and colored enamels. Since the majority of hardware items are currently imported from China or Taiwan, specific measurements can vary from standard American and British measurements.
EYELETS are a single piece with the back tube which is rolled or split to catch the material and are best used on lite-duty items where the back is not seen or felt. Grommets have a washer-back which provides additional strength, helps prevent freying and has a finished, smooth look on the back and are best used for heavier-duty items. Each requires size-specific setter tools and pre-punching holes, use standard inch measurements to determine correct hole size.
SNAPS are used to attach 2 layers of material and are made from 4 unique shaped pieces. The button or cap is seen on the surface and is set to the female socket, the male base to set to the eyelet on the bottom layer of material. Three sizes are typically used, Line 16 is used for light weight items such as gloves, Line 20 is used for medium weight items such as shirts, Line 24 are much stronger and best for biker gear and recreational items. Size specific setter tools are required.
RIVETS are used to permanatly secure multiple layers of material together with a size specific setter. CHICAGO SCREWS are simular to rivets but screw together which allows it to be easily unscrewed.
SPIKES and SAM BROWNE STUDS are available in many sizes and finishes and can be either screwback or rivet-back which require special setter tools. Decorative spots are simple metal shapes which are applied to clothing by pre-punching a small slit with a pointed blade or single prong chisle then inserting the spot and bending the prongs with a slot screwdriver.
CONCHOS are shaped metal items usually 3/4" to 1-1/4" round discs which are added to belts or havier items for decoration. Frequently conchos are screwback but some have permanatly set rivetbacks. Adapters will fit most screwback concho threads to change them into sew-on buttons, drawer pulls, and saddle screws and slides.
BUCKLES typically are available in 2 styles, heel bar buckles are have the tongue on one side and require a separate "keep to hold down the end of the belt. A center-bar buckle has the tongue on a central bar with the opposite side of the buckle acting as a keep. RINGS are typically are plated, welded steel however plated brass, solid brass, split (not welded), key rings and variously shaped rings are widley available.
